ZYLSTRA, Dirk Zylstra

Born in Groningen, The Netherlands, to the late Hendrik and Akke Zijlstra, Dirk Zylstra lived a life defined by quiet strength, steady devotion, and a deep love for his family. From his early years as a mechanical technician at his father’s factory, Dirk brought a natural steadiness and skill that shaped every chapter of his life. At fifteen, he met Frederika β€œRia,” the seamstress who would become his lifelong partner. Their bond – rooted in loyalty, adventure, and unwavering love – endured for 62 years.

After serving in the Dutch Army, Dirk and Ria married and later immigrated to Canada in 1969 with their children, Sandra and Michael. Dirk built a respected career at Xerox Canada, known for his reliability, craftsmanship, and thoughtful approach to every task. Later, inspired by a shared love of Cocker Spaniels, Dirk and Ria embarked on a new chapter as professional dog groomers, eventually opening a family‑run pet store and grooming salon with Sandra and her late husband, John.

Dirk was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a deeply loving Opa to his grandsons, Gordon and Bryant. He celebrated every milestone with unmistakable pride, and his love of the outdoors created cherished memories – camping trips, fishing adventures, long drives, and spontaneous explorations that brought his family closer together. He also carried a lifelong passion for World Cup Soccer, cheering with unmistakable Dutch pride every four years.

Those who knew Dirk remember a man who showed up early, stayed late, and never complained – a rare and steady presence whose quiet brilliance and gentle heart shaped everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the character of his children and grandchildren, and in the countless moments of love and wisdom he shared.

β€œA life built on love, lived with purpose,

and carried forward in every heart he touched.”
