Godec JulkaGODEC, Julijana 'Julka' (Seljak) - Julijana Godec (Seljak), our beloved mama and stara mama, completed her journey on earth on August 7, 2020 at the age of 93.

After a sudden and short illness she had a peaceful and gentle passing surrounded by her family, and for this we are eternally grateful.

Predeceased by her husband Frank, she leaves behind her children Margaret, Peter (Vicki), and Frank Jr., her grandchildren Oliver, Timothy and Petra, and a large extended family in Slovenija and Argentina.

Born in Žiri, Slovenija, Julijana (Julka to most) came to Toronto in 1962 to build a new life. Devout in her faith, she lived her life in service of others. She spent countless hours volunteering at her church Marija Pomagaj, helping friends and neighbours in need without fanfare or recognition, and tirelessly caring for her family. She attended daily mass until severe arthritis made it impossible, and thereafter never missed her 8am TV service.

For Julka, food was love. Nothing gave her greater joy than serving us a multi-course meal of Slovenian delicacies, always followed by the most lovingly prepared and beautifully presented baked goods and desserts. We were always sent home with bags of leftovers to tide us over until next time. Her generosity was boundless. Children and grandchildren seldom left her house without a $20 bill snuck into a pocket or bag. Although ends were often hard to meet, she always made sure there was enough for thoughtful birthday and Christmas gifts, anniversary bouquets, gifts for family overseas, and donations for the collection basket at church.

As her children became more independent, Julka found more time for hobbies like knitting, crochet, bobbin lace (klekljanje), classic movies, and regular long-distance phone calls with overseas family and friends. Afternoons consisted of coffee, dessert and praying the rosary, followed by her long-time guilty pleasure - her afternoon soap operas. She most relished her role as stara mama. Her playful nature led to adventures in the park, piggyback rides, rhymes, songs, and always lots of ice cream. Her grandsons treasure the memories of her kindness, and the warm and loving attention she gave them through their childhoods and into young adulthood.

In her final year she was delighted with the unexpected gift of a baby granddaughter. Cradling her as she slept, singing her lullabies, and later allowing her to help navigate the mobility walker, she loved every moment spent with her precious “punčka”.

As her mobility faltered in her later years, Julka prayed she would be able to spend the time remaining to her in the home and garden she loved. We are so thankful her prayers were answered. We who had the privilege of this extraordinary woman’s presence in our lives find it difficult to imagine the future without her. Draga mama, we will always cherish your memory with deep love and gratitude.

Arrangements with Ridley funeral home. Friends wishing to pay their respects may visit the family from 10-11am on Tuesday, August 11th at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal (730 Brown’s Line, Etobicoke). The Funeral Mass will be held directly thereafter at 11am. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery.

In her memory, donations to The Slovenian Linden Foundation-Dom Lipa are greatly appreciated.
