BLACK, Martha Black - Died, of cancer, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, on January 7, 2024.
She was the beloved wife and companion to Paul Hutner; and sister to Elizabeth Black (Stephen Clarke).
Martha was born in New Westminster on July 18, 1945, and attended school in North Vancouver, Leaside, Stratford and Guelph.
She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Trinity College, University of Toronto.
Martha's interest in and knowledge of First Nations Art was begun with her work at the Isaacs Gallery, where she was curator, then assistant director, for about 20 years.
When a change in career was called for, Martha first earned an MA from York University, then a PhD in Art History from the University of Victoria.
Martha was Curator of Indigenous Collections at the Royal British Columbia Museum from 1997 to 2019.
She leaves close colleagues from this world, as well as many other dear friends.
All will remember her intelligence, wit and style.
