Tanaka PaulineTANAKA, Pauline Toyoko (Nishimura) 75, passed away on June 23, 2021 peacefully at home with her husband Austin and son Blair lovingly on hand.

She was born August 15, 1945 in Greenwood, British Columbia to Robert Toji and Chiyo Frances Nishimura. After World War II the family briefly moved to Japan before returning in 1951 settling in Toronto.

Pauline loved gardening, arts & crafts and teaching. An avid proponent of education, she taught elementary school with the Toronto District School Board prior to the birth of her children and then took up the art of Bunka Shishu where she quickly attained the title of Master Thread Artist.

As a natural extension of her teaching background she shared her passion for Bunka Shishu as an instructor at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, TDSB, Club 66, and the Momiji Health Care Society.

Although a gifted artist and educator, her true calling was being a mother and grandmother. She routinely showered her three granddaughters with affection, time and patience - passing on her wisdom and love of learning early on. A recent 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Hawaii with her granddaughters was the highlight of her many visits there and will be fondly remembered by all.

Pauline is survived by her husband Austin Tanaka, sister Judy (Ron) Nishi, sons Shawn (Penelope) and Blair (Jacquie) and her granddaughters Lucy, Sylvie and Hannah.

Due to Covid restrictions there will be a private funeral with a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or Koden donations may be made to the Toronto Buddhist Church, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Center, Momiji Health Care Society or the Canadian Cancer Society in her name.
