MATTAN, Achiel Mattan

It is with sadness that we the family of Achiel (Archie) Francis Mattan announce his peaceful passing after a brief struggle with illness, at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital, on July 22nd, 2026, at the age of 90. Archie was born in Windsor, son of the late Cyriel Gerard Mattan and late former Maria Christine Rosseel. Archie is survived by the love of his life, Denise (Plancke) Mattan; together they shared 69 wonderful years together. Together they grew tobacco in Walsingham between 1959-1980, then they ran a chemical business, grew cash crops and did custom spraying. In 2001, they retired and moved to Tillsonburg. Archie was a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church. In his spare time, Archie enjoyed volunteering his time. He was the past President of the Belgian Fair Board, past President of the Langton Lions Club (1974-75), past President of the Langton Thunderbirds Jr. Hockey Club, past Director of the Delhi Belgian Hall, and a past Director of the Norfolk Farmers Co-op.

Achiel Mattan will be remembered by those who knew him for his larger-than-life personality, his strong wit and as a great storyteller. He was a man always put together and dressed to the 9’s. He was strong in body, in spirit and in commitment to his family and friends. Archie will be dearly missed by his children and their families: Terry Mattan, of Tillsonburg and his son Tyler Mattan and late daughter Melissa (Oct. 13, 2024) (survived by her husband Taylor Tregoning and their son Callum); Darrell (Sandra) Mattan, of Tillsonburg and their children Victoria (Kyle) VanHeugten (their children Alyvia & Auston), Andrew (Taylor) Mattan (their children Archie and Lennyn). Also survived by his brother Dr. Frank Mattan (Judy), of Tillsonburg, as well as by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his sister Marguerite DeBeer (late husband Valere).

In keeping with Archie’s expressed wishes, cremation has taken place. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
