Marcheta Elizabeth Biddiscombe (née Sansom)
June 20, 1926 ~ December 5, 2024
She was more than a bit saucy, our Mom. For us, she was the centre of our universe. Marcheta passed peacefully on December 5th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Perley Veterans Health Centre, Ottawa, Ontario.
Born to parents Margaret and James Sansom on June 20th, 1926, in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Marcheta grew up with her four siblings. In 1944, at the age of 18, Marcheta enlisted with the Women’s Royal Canadian Service, training in Ottawa and serving in Newfoundland. After the war, she enrolled at the University of New Brunswick, where she met her future husband, Bernard (Biddy) Biddiscombe. Together, they had six children and lived in Canada and the U.K. during Biddy’s career with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Later, they settled in Ottawa.
Marcheta was a wonderful mother who taught her children to be independent and think for themselves. She was funny, irreverent, and full of energy, enjoying a busy social life filled with sailing, golf, curling, gardening, and reading. She traveled to over 45 countries, volunteered with the Canadian Cancer Society, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Marcheta is predeceased by her husband Biddy, her long-term partner Ken Roy, sisters Jean and Joyce, and brothers David (Buzz) and Robert. She is survived by her six children: Penny (Bruce) Hobbs, Wendy (Paul) Overend, Bill Biddiscombe, Cathy (Garth) Gilroy, Mary (Bruce d.) Biddiscombe, and Annabel (Chris d.) Ring. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren who lovingly called her "Nanacombe."
The family extends its eternal gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Perley Veterans Health Centre for their devoted care during Marcheta's final years.
In lieu of flowers or cards, donations to the Perley Veteran’s Health Centre Foundation are appreciated.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Cole Funeral Services.
