Carl Alexander Blahut

November 13, 1944 - September 13, 2024

Carl Alexander Blahut passed away peacefully at Lee Manor in Owen Sound on Friday, September 13, 2024, just two months shy of his 80th birthday. He is lovingly reunited with his devoted wife of over 50 years, Shirley Mildred (née Bemister, 2019), and cherished family members who awaited him. Proud and loving father of Monica Blahut (Garret Moy) of Owen Sound and beloved “Poppa” of Foster Fenton and Emily Fenton. Carl is survived by his sister Sylvia (Bob) Frost of Alliston and in-laws Harris, Don (Jean) Bemister, Sandy (Sarah) Bemister, and Betty (Dave) Chaulk. Special uncle to Phil West and nephew to Auntie Evelyn Radostits. He will also be deeply missed by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Carl was born and raised in Toronto, where he met Shirley, the love of his life, and they married in 1968. Following in his father's footsteps, Carl became a proud member of the Boilermakers Local 128, a career he honored for over 60 years. With his Newfoundland roots and adventuresome spirit, Carl adopted his “pick of the litter,” daughter Monica, in 1975, cherishing a bond that lasted until his passing. His time with his grandchildren, Foster and Emily, was filled with joy, travels, and stories.

Carl had a lifelong love of trains, creating impressive model layouts both at home and at the Participation Lodge. He also had interests in space, family history, and a quick wit, sharing jokes and thoughtful emails with loved ones. A proud Ukrainian, he treasured Blahut family reunions and looked forward to the next in 2025. Known for his “days work for a day’s pay” philosophy, he remained curious, solving Sudoku and crosswords to stay sharp.

Throughout his later years, Carl received exceptional care from many, including his caregiver Cristin Jones, whose support made her like family. Carl’s sense of humor and warm personality brightened the days of all who knew him at Lee Manor and beyond. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who provided support and care, especially the teams at St. Michael’s Hospital, Brightshores Health System, and Grey Bruce Hospice.

Family and friends are invited to a casual celebration of Carl’s life at Harrison Park Community Centre, Owen Sound, on Friday, September 27, 2024, from 1:30 to 4:00 pm, with spoken words at 2:00 pm. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Grey Bruce Hospice (Chapman House) are gratefully appreciated.
