Yap Soo Choo
December 8, 1929 - January 25, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Yap Soo Choo, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Born in Malaysia, she later moved to Singapore before immigrating to Canada in the early 1990s.
Soo Choo was married to Tan Siew Eng, the love of her life, until his passing on January 8, 2018. Their love story was one of devotion, with Siew Eng affectionately calling her ‘Linda’ after the famous Chinese actress Lin Dai. Together, they had three children: Leslie, Charles, and Jimmy. Though she loved all her children dearly, they often teased her that Leslie was her favorite.
In Singapore, Soo Choo was a respected educator, passionately teaching and shaping young minds. Beyond the classroom, she enjoyed gourmet cooking, folk dancing, and playing classical Chinese musical instruments. She was also a dedicated Tai Chi practitioner, which kept her strong and agile despite past injuries.
Her adventurous spirit and adaptability shone through when she visited Canada, effortlessly adjusting to driving on the right side of the road. A proud Canadian since the late 1990s, she cherished her new home while holding dear to her roots.
Soo Choo is survived by her three children and their partners, as well as her beloved grandchildren: Stefanie (Jon), Christobel (Ian), Phoebe, and Sherrilyn (Theodore). She was also blessed with great-grandsons Aiden and Jude.
We also wish to acknowledge the wonderful women who brought joy to her life: Wai Han, Gene, Geri, and Amy. A special mention goes to Sunita, whose love and dedication made her the daughter our mom never had.
