Alexander Masson Cowie
July 1924 – November 29, 2024
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander Masson Cowie, who passed away on November 29, 2024, at the age of 100. Al spent his final years enjoying life at Parkwood Veterans' Western Counties in London, Ontario, playing bocce ball, shuffleboard, bingo, and sharing his trademark jokes.
Born in Burnaby, B.C., Al served with the Seaforth Highlanders during WWII, part of the Italian Campaign, where he was wounded in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. Sent to London, Ontario, to recuperate, he met his beloved wife, Mae Mason, and they married in 1946. Together, they built a life filled with love, travel, and joy, celebrating 63 wonderful years until Mae's passing in 2008.
Al was a devoted father to Janice Finlay (Ron) of London, and a proud grandfather to Melanie Dalton (Scott) of Brisbane, Australia, and Melinda Dalton (Marc) of Montreal. He cherished his great-grandchildren Alexandra, Luna, Christopher Bolland, Alistair, and Dashiell Champoux, and his memory lives on in his two namesakes, Alexandra and “Little Al” Alistair.
Al’s life was a testament to joy, generosity, and a love for family. His work at Westminster Hospital for 40 years and his vibrant presence at Parkwood Veterans’ made him a cherished part of the community. He was a jokester, a handyman, and above all, a loving father, grandfather, and friend.
In honor of Al’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Instead, he invites everyone to celebrate life by showing love to your children, enjoying a beer, indulging in too much ice cream, and marveling at a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Donations in his memory can be made to the Salvation Army or the Parkwood Hospital Veterans Unit.
His family expresses deep gratitude to the staff and volunteers at Parkwood Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Al’s sparkle and humor will forever be remembered by all who knew him.
