HULLAND, Dr. Thomas "Tom" John, DVM, - Dr. Thomas "Tom" Hulland passed away on October 15, 2018 at age 88.
After spending his early years in rural Alberta, he moved to Ontario where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Toronto.
He received his PhD in Pathology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
He was also honoured as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London, England Dr. Hulland served as the OVC Associate Dean (Academic), from 1969 to 1981, chaired several University of Guelph task forces and served as Acting Dean of OVC twice.
He also played a key role in the classroom design of the Lifetime Learning Centre. Dr. Hulland joined the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), becoming only the second Canadian to attain Diplomate status.
He later served as ACVP President, in 1973. Dr. Hulland was also elected as President of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) for 1971 - 1972.
He is survived by Eleanore (Daymond), his wife of 62 years, their four children, John (Shelley), Carol (Steve Strugnell), Jane Wheeler (Arthur), Sarah (Mike Smith), bonus child Robert Tsushima and grandchildren Megan, Erin, Tommy, Neil, Laura, Jenny, Gordon and Scott.
Tom was predeceased by his sister Marion Terris and survived by sisters Ruth Daw and Esther Klemp. Tom was a devoted family man who is fondly remembered for his abundant energy and his capacity to accomplish almost anything.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the University of Guelph Arboretum Centre, 200 Arboretum Rd., Guelph on Saturday, December 1st from 1 to 4 p.m.
