John Michael Duffy
March 14, 1943 – January 15, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Michael Duffy on January 15, 2025, at the age of 81. John passed away peacefully with family by his side at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.
John was the dearly beloved husband of Denyse (née Tremblay) for 52 wonderful years. He was a loving father to Brian (Holly) and Stephanie Summers (Cameron), and a cherished and devoted Papa to Owen, Aidan, and Emma. John is also survived by his dear siblings Gail Moores (David), Carolynn Duffy Scott (John), and Kenneth (Mona). He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
John earned his BA in Political Science and Economics at the University of Toronto, Trinity College (’65), and began his career at Clarkson Gordon, where he earned his Chartered Accountant designation (’69). Over his career, he held several positions in finance, including as Chief Financial Officer in the food services and restaurant industry, and later as co-owner and CFO of Neate Roller Ltd.
A dedicated member of his community, John participated in many activities in Whitby. He established the 9th Whitby Beaver Group in the late 1970s, served on multiple town boards and advisory committees, and contributed significantly to the Whitby Public Library Board, helping oversee the construction of the current library, opened in 2005. His name is proudly displayed on the commemorative plaque there. John was also deeply involved in politics for over 60 years, serving as an official agent/CFO, campaign manager, and advisor to numerous campaigns and political leaders.
John’s happiest moments were spent at the cottage he built on Ashby Lake with his family and close friends. His family extends their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Toronto General, Lakeridge Health Oshawa - Cancer Centre, and the 4F Palliative Care Unit, as well as Shelley, his PSW, for her outstanding care and compassion.
