Friedrich “Fred” Ehrlich
March 2, 1933 – April 15, 2025
After many peaceful walks on the trails in St. Jacob’s and Waterloo, our dear “Onkel Fritz” passed away at St. Jacob’s Place on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
Born in Zied, Transylvania, Fred emigrated to Waterloo in 1969 to build a new life near his brother John and family.
He was predeceased by his four siblings and in 2013, by his beloved wife of 41 years, Agnes (née Bartel).
He will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, and extended family in Canada and Germany. His joy came from sharing stories, holding the hands of the little ones,
and spending time walking in nature. Fred took great care of his wife’s rose garden, and found peace and pride in tending it.
A skilled tile setter, Fred was respected in his trade and community. Even in retirement, he stayed active with chess, gardening, and preparing his “daily health tea” from foraged nettles.
His gentle nature, wisdom, and determination inspired many — including healthcare providers who admired his independent spirit.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the staff at St. Jacob’s Place and to Dr. Cettimada for their care and compassion.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Friday, May 9th.
Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel and reception in the Fireside Room.
A private family interment will take place at Parkview Cemetery.
Donations in Fred’s memory may be made to WRHN – Queen’s Blvd (formerly St. Mary’s Hospital), Bethel Lutheran Church, the Zied Church Restoration Fund,
or a Tree Planting Tribute — to honour the many trees he planted throughout his life.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home.
