CHAVES, Fulgencio Fernandes - Obituary for Grandpa - Fulgencio Fernandes Chaves was born on June 18, 1938 in Porto, Portugal and passed on March 17, 2021.
He was the youngest of six children. He predeceased all of his siblings and often expressed his loneliness when he was the last one standing.
He survived growing up in a poor family during a time of war and dictatorship. Grandpa was an incredible man who worked very hard to provide for his family, but felt he had to leave his beloved Portugal in search of a better life for his family.
Fulgencio married Albertina Chaves on July 16, 1961 and bore 5 children, Ondina, Fernanda, Carlos, Ze and Luisa. Albertina and Fulgencio would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this July. He leaves behind twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandkids.
He was a passionate, stubborn, and strong man. He had a passion for life and had a really hard time accepting aging and slowing down. He fought for what he believed was right and just.
Grandpa had the best stories. Even if we heard them on more than one occasion. It's surreal to think he will no longer be here with us. Grandpa we will always miss you and we will cherish all those memories. It seemed fitting to pass on a day celebrating the spirits, St. Patrick’s Day. Until we meet again, we will enjoy a glass for you! We love you!
