With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Ethel Teitelbaum, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend to many. She left us on November 25, 2024, surrounded by love, family, and the music she adored—Bach, Strauss, Mozart, and Vivaldi.
Born and raised in the slums of Montreal, Ethel carried a deep sense of empathy and determination throughout her life. Her illustrious career spanned roles as a public programs head at the St. Lawrence Centre, a PR executive, a special assistant to a senior minister in the Pierre Trudeau government, and a groundbreaking judge on the Immigration and Refugee Appeal Board, where she served for 21 years. Her decisions—marked by fairness, ethics, and compassion—changed lives and set lasting precedents.
Ethel was a pioneer, a fierce advocate for justice, and a tireless volunteer. She served as President of the Toronto Jewish Film Society and as a public member of the Council of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Her passions for opera, cinema, and global travel were matched by her dedication to family and friends. She believed in ambition, integrity, and the importance of connection.
Ethel's legacy continues through her children, Mara, Sari, and Matthew; her grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She instilled in them her unwavering values of love, loyalty, and purpose. As her family reflected, "Surely she knew that we are all carrying something of her within us."
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Vivian and the staff at Kensington Gardens for their compassionate care during Ethel's final days.
In memory of Ethel Teitelbaum, donations to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Condolences may be shared at www.benjamins.ca.
