Darcy Leigh Graham (née Bishop)

February 20, 1968 – September 25, 2024

With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Darcy Leigh Graham, surrounded by love and family at home on September 25, 2024. Darcy will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Bruce, and her cherished children, Holly and Fisher.

She is survived by her sister Tracy Campbell, brother Douglas Bishop, brother-in-law Mark Campbell, brother-in-law Adam Pankhurst, nephews Morgan Campbell and Rob Scott, and niece Kaitlyn Scott. Darcy was predeceased by her parents, Doug and Ann Bishop, and her sister-in-law, Susan Scott.

Darcy’s life was a vibrant tapestry of love, art, and adventure. Her infectious joie de vivre, creative spirit, and generous heart touched countless lives. As a devoted mother, wife, friend, and artist, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and beauty.

Born with a spark, Darcy illuminated the world around her. Her artistic passions included painting, pottery, and design. She had a unique gift for finding beauty in everyday objects and transforming them into something extraordinary. Her artwork reflected her zest for life and her deep love for the people and world around her.

Darcy cherished her lifelong friendships formed during her childhood in Brockville, Ontario, and at Brentwood College on Vancouver Island. Her remarkable journey was filled with memorable moments from her escapades at Lake of the Woods, to her sorority days at McGill University, to her artistic explorations at Savannah College of Art and Design.

Darcy’s spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her. As her loved ones recall, Darcy was “a dreamer, an artist, and a true original.” Her love for life’s simple pleasures – sharing stories, cooking, and savoring wine on the deck – brought joy to all around her.

The family extends their gratitude to the compassionate staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island for their care and kindness.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Haywards Funeral Home.

Susan Catherine Baine

March 13, 1960 – October 7, 2024

Susan Catherine Baine passed away peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024. Known for her laughter, sunshine, and joy, Sue created lasting connections through her beloved flower stand on Park Drive for over 20 years. In 2012, she earned the Agricultural Farm Business of the Year award, but it was the friendships she nurtured that meant the most to her.

Sue cherished life’s simple pleasures: early morning swims, picking daffodils in the rain, and maintaining a perfect tan. A kind and giving soul, she was always there for others, even through her own struggles. Her joy and optimism brightened the lives of everyone she met.

Sue’s friends are deeply grateful to the staff at Lady Minto Hospital and her home care nurses for their care and kindness during her final days.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Instead, Sue would love for friends to celebrate her life by raising a glass, planting a dahlia, and sharing laughter in her memory. Sue’s legacy of joy, sunshine, and her dependable Suzuki Samurai will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Haywards Funeral Home.

Philip Dudley Mason

July 10, 1934 – October 23, 2024

Phil passed away peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living in Victoria, B.C. He was the beloved husband of the late June Mason. Born in London, England, Phil immigrated to Canada, settling in the Niagara Region of Ontario. In 1961, he married June, having reconnected with her in Canada after her own immigration.

Phil enjoyed a successful career as a photographer and was the author of two published books about the Niagara area. In 1992, Phil and June retired to Salt Spring Island, B.C., where they embraced the beauty of nature. Phil was an avid bird watcher and a keen sailor who cherished his two sailboats, both named Toad Hull and Toad Hull II. He also had a passion for skiing and tennis, hobbies he pursued with great enthusiasm.

During the winter seasons, Phil and June traveled extensively across the U.S. in their Airstream, creating many lively adventures and cherished memories along the way. Phil was deeply loved and appreciated by his family and friends. His kindness, generosity, and fun-loving nature touched all who knew him.

Phil enjoyed his weekly gin martini with three olives and his nightly brandy nightcap, pleasures he continued to indulge in even during his final days. He is deeply missed by his sister-in-law Anne, his nieces and nephews, and many friends.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated nurses and caregivers at Sunrise Senior Living in Victoria, who provided Phil with comfort and care in the later years of his long life. Special thanks are also given to Dr. Harley Syyong and Dr. Zul Nathoo for their excellent medical care, as well as to Rick Alexander for his compassionate support.

Respecting Phil’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Please remember Phil in your own special way and treasure the good memories.

John Frederick Hobbs

March 28, 1944 – November 17, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Hobbs, who left us peacefully in his sleep at Lady Minto Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Vancouver, John was a beacon of kindness, humour, and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

John devoted 30 years to the airline industry, beginning with CP Air and later transitioning to Air Canada, where he built a career filled with dedication and adventure. In retirement, his passion for travel and storytelling found new life as a guide, sharing the beauty of Canada with visitors from around the world.

A proud member of the Salt Spring Island community, John volunteered tirelessly, serving as an emergency POD leader for his neighbourhood and offering his time to the SSI Tourism Centre and Sendial, a Thrifty Foods shopping service for the elderly and shut-ins.

John was a beloved husband, a loving father and grandfather (affectionately known as Papa G), and a cherished presence in the community. His warmth, humor, and quiet acts of kindness enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

He is survived by Roz, his loving wife of 54 years; his son Chris and his wife and children Catherine, Sila, and Kai; his son David and his wife and children Farran, Declan, and Parker; his daughter Michelle; and his loyal dog Sammy.

In honoring John’s memory, the family invites you to carry forward his selfless nature. Perform an act of kindness for a loved one or a neighbor—expecting nothing in return—just as John would have done for you.
