Hugo Wall

March 25, 1935 - April 13, 2017

Hugo Wall, surrounded by the family he loves, left this Earth on April 13, 2017.
He leaves behind countless cherished memories, and is dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Monika Wall. He is forever in the hearts of his children; Enoch Wall of Northern California, and Esther Wall of Ontario, Canada.

Predeceased by his parents, Lilli Zweygardt and Waldemar Wall. Followed in death by his very dear brother, Egon Wall of Germany, in 2018.

Hugo was a quiet man, who did great things in humble ways. He was born in 1935, in a small, German speaking farming community, near the Black Sea, in Ukraine. As World War II ended, numerous families fled the area, leaving behind everything they owned. Established and prosperous farms were left behind as they fled in long wagon trains, with only horses and buggies. Tragedy was encountered along the way as Hugo and Egon's father lost his life.

They eventually settled in southern Germany, where their ancestors had originally come from, several generations earlier.

Although times were difficult and his widowed mother had little money to help with university, Hugo became a successful electrical apprentice and secured a good job. He met Monika and they married in 1964. Both of them had dreams of adventure and travel, so the young couple set out by ship across the Atlantic. They lived in various places in upstate New York and Ontario, before settling in Kitchener, where their children were born. The adventure continued as they moved further north to enjoy water skiing, fishing and boating in Port Elgin, on the shores of Lake Huron.

The retirement years were later spent in the Greater Toronto area - a quiet life of long walks, music and books, in a house that Hugo had built himself.

Hugo had a deep faith which kept him both strong and optimistic his entire life. He was deeply committed to his family and provided steady support at all times - be it spiritual support or financial assistance to family and close friends. He was the quintessential example of the immigrant who came to North America, worked hard, and built a better life.

Hugo will be dearly missed, but we find comfort in knowing that his faith has led him home.

A private graveside service was held on Easter weekend, 2017.
