In Loving Memory

At the age of 95, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was called home to his Lord and Saviour, peacefully in his sleep.

Simon was born in Ruigahuizen, a small village in the Netherlands. In 1954, he and Joan married and immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Whitby in 1963. He worked as a farmhand before transitioning to Dunlop/Firestone and later General Motors. In retirement, he dedicated his time to Durham Christian Homes, where he worked security and volunteered tirelessly.

Always quick with a joke and a smile, he was loved by many. He was deeply devoted to his faith, serving his church as a custodian, elder, deacon, and committee member. A talented woodworker, he created beautiful pieces ranging from furniture to windmills and bird carvings. Simon and Joan also shared a love of travel, exploring North America from Newfoundland to Alaska, California, and Florida.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 70 years, Janke (Joan) Jongsma (née Doorenspleet), and three children: Sylvia (Paschal), Perry (Pam), and Alfred (Sylvia). He was a cherished grandfather to Jeffrey (Jamie), Jennifer (Brent), Joanne, Megan, Laura, Ryan, and Kiera, and a proud great-grandfather to Chloe, Alexander, Nicholas, Ginnie, Isabella, and Sam.
