Joseph Alde Chiasson

July 15, 1933 - November 9, 2024

Beloved husband of Janet (Bull) and father to Michelle (Al) Kunetsky. Predeceased by his son Michael Chiasson. Grandfather to Jennifer (Brandon) Niece, Kristen (Timothy) Brooks, and Brian (Cynthia) Kunetsky. Great-grandfather to Jackson, Carson, and Emerson Niece, Abby, Jazlynn, and Kyla Brooks, Lauryn, Hudson, and Lexi Kunetsky.

Alde was born as the eighth of twelve children to Amanda and Pierre Chiasson in the French community of Caraquet, New Brunswick. In 1936, the family settled in Allardville, New Brunswick. After finishing school, he worked alongside his father and brothers in logging camps before moving to Ontario at 19, where he initially spoke only French. His career began in construction before he found his calling at General Motors in February 1953. His passion for GM cars, especially Buicks, saw him rise from a line worker to a group leader, foreman, and eventually a coordinator for new model development, traveling throughout GM plants in the USA.

Alde and his family faced hardship with the unexpected loss of his son, which deeply impacted their lives. He retired at 52 following a severe heart attack, yet after recovery, he embraced life with his wife through travel, exploring places like Hawaii, Europe, Alaska, and California.

Above all, Alde cherished his family—his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His was a life of resilience, love, and fulfillment.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the People, 570 Marion Avenue, Oshawa, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Following the Mass, burial will take place at Mount Lawn Funeral & Cemetery, with a reception to follow inside the Funeral Home.

Haruko Helen Shintani

March 29, 1928 - November 4, 2024

It is with very sad hearts that we announce the passing of Haruko Helen Shintani (née Kitamura), who passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, at the age of 96, surrounded by family. Early in the morning, Helen was called to her eternal home by her Heavenly Father.

Born in Port Alberni, B.C., Helen grew up in Great Central and was forcibly relocated to Hastings Park and Slocan City during WWII. She later moved to Toronto, Ontario, after the war. She was a devoted mother to Matthew Shintani (Sharon) and Marni Shintani (Martin) and is fondly remembered by her extended Kitamura and Shintani families. Predeceased by her beloved husband Sakaye “Soc” Richard Shintani, her parents Shotaro and Hatsu Kitamura, her siblings, and many dear in-laws, she is survived by Soc’s sister Yukiko Joan Kajiura (Sam).

Helen met Soc at a JC Young People’s dance in Toronto. They married and later moved to Hamilton in 1958. Helen was a dedicated mother and later worked in food services at Henderson Hospital, retiring in 1993. She was known for her vegetable and fruit garden, her delicious Japanese meals, and her frugality and generosity, sharing her home-grown produce with neighbors and family. Helen loved animals and cared for several dogs and cats over her lifetime, many of them rescues.

She was active in the Japanese-Canadian community in Hamilton and volunteered at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre of Hamilton and the Hamilton Japanese United Church. Helen had a passion for ceramics, quilting, and knitting, and she enjoyed practicing yoga and tai chi, as well as spending time watching sports and cooking shows. She valued simplicity, health, and family, passing these virtues on to her children and loved ones.

A few weeks before her passing, Helen shared her faith in Jesus Christ, expressing her belief in eternal life and peace in Heaven. Her family finds comfort in her final profession of faith and the peaceful, full life she led.

The cremation has already taken place, and a private family memorial service will be held. Interment at Mount Lawn Cemetery will take place in spring 2025, honoring Helen’s name, “Haru,” which means spring in Japanese—a season of beauty, new beginnings, and sakura blossoms, symbolizing the brief and precious nature of life.

Memorial donations in Helen’s memory are gratefully accepted to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centres in Hamilton and Toronto.

Dekota James Albert Brooks

February 13, 1990 - September 13, 2024

It is with the most profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dekota James Albert Brooks. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to parents Terrance and Essie Brooks.

Dekota will be deeply missed by his beloved wife and four children. He leaves behind his sisters, Essilena McAfee and Tarika Brooks, and his brother, Jakeba McAfee. Dekota is also survived by his grandmother, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles who will forever cherish the memories they shared together. His legacy of love and laughter will live on in their hearts forever.

Scott Lewis Dewsbury

January 25, 1979 - November 2, 2024

Born and raised in Oshawa, Scott was a beloved son of Paul and Jane, cherished brother to Quinn, and the loving companion of Emily.

Scott had a remarkable sense of humor, wit, and a touch of sarcasm that brought joy to everyone around him. He loved people, animals, and nature, especially spending time with his family’s dogs. Scott was an avid reader and writer, keeping extensive notes on his thoughts and interests. Artistically talented, he excelled in college, where he was on the honor roll and mentored many fellow students.

One of Scott’s favorite pastimes was going to yard sales with his brother, Quinn, where they would find hidden treasures that always managed to sell. Scott also loved buying and selling items online, turning even ordinary items into valuable finds. He was known and loved by everyone who met him, and people often shared with his mother what a kind and thoughtful person he was.

We are all blessed to have had Scott in our lives. “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Harper, Pat (Patricia) – Passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, in her 89th year. Devoted wife of the late Bruce and beloved mother of Dave (Lesley) and Brian. Loving grandma of Kyle (Jessica), Sarah (Diogo), and the late Justin. Proud great-grandma of Wyatt, Sawyer, and Beau.

Pat will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by her siblings, other family members, and friends. Her kindness and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

In loving memory of Bruce Couper, who peacefully passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, after courageously facing MS for the past 48 years. Bruce was the beloved husband of Carol-Ann (nee Frost) and the loving father of Christopher Couper. He was a cherished grandfather to Nicky, Taylor, and Alexis, and will be missed dearly by his in-laws, extended family, and friends.

In keeping with Bruce’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and services were entrusted to Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made in Bruce’s name to the MS Society of Canada.

Nicholina (Nicky) Bellissimo

4-Aug-1930 – 3-Nov-2024

Peacefully, at Lakeridge Heights Retirement Residence, Nicholina (Nicky) Bellissimo passed away in her 95th year on November 3, 2024. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Salvatore (Sam), son-in-laws Steven Holland and Ronald Mimms, her brother Arthur, and sister Ann.

Nicky was a cherished mother to her son Ralph (wife Laurel) and daughter Vicki. She was the loving grandmother of Carl, Luc (Faye), and Christopher, and great-grandmother to Colton and Sloan DiCarlo-Bellissimo, and Rowan James Holland-Houston. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Nicky was born in Toronto and grew up in Mimico. She worked as a dedicated legal secretary until the age of 60 and was actively involved in The Catholic Women’s League until her later years. Recognized twice as Volunteer of the Year in Whitby, she was known for her warmth and generosity, often hosting family gatherings, preparing her famous Sunday dinners with dozens of meatballs, and winning several family baking contests.

Visitation will be held at Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery, 21 Garrard Road, Whitby (North of Hwy 2) on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and Thursday, November 7, 2024, from 10:00 AM until the time of service in the chapel at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

Ashley Lynn Legault
January 28, 1987 – October 26, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Ashley on October 26, 2024, following a courageous battle at Oshawa Hospital. Ashley’s smile could light up any room, and her warm, expressive eyes left a lasting impression on everyone. In her final act of generosity, Ashley’s eyes have been donated, allowing someone else to see the world with her spirit. She is survived by her loving parents, Laurie and Dennis, and her younger siblings, Brandon and Stephanie. Ashley will be missed deeply by her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is now reunited with her beloved grandparents and her cherished dogs in heaven.

Ashley attended Tania’s Place for over 20 years and was part of a large, supportive community. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Tania’s Place, with a special acknowledgment to Francie, George, Nancy, and Sue. The family also wishes to express gratitude to the ICU and C7 staff at Oshawa Hospital, including Deb and Ashley’s devoted PSWs, for their compassion and dedication throughout her year-long stay.

A Memorial Service will be held at Mount Lawn Funeral Home, 21 Garrard Rd., Whitby, ON, on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 12:00 p.m., with Memorial Visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Miller, Judy Dorothy, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the age of 53. Loving mother to Keannah, Kamryn, and Emanuel, and beloved daughter of Ken and Leanne Miller. Dear sister of Linda, cherished aunt to Nicole and Emma, and treasured great-aunt to Beau. Judy will be fondly remembered by her extended family and many friends.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff in the ICU and Palliative Care at Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their compassionate care.
