CLAYTON, Michael John Clayton - In Loving Memory of Michael John Clayton

Born July 26, 1961, Mike passed away peacefully at home with his wife Sharon by his side on Friday, June 28, 2024. Loving husband for 21 years. Much-loved son of John "Jack" (deceased) and Margaret. Much-loved brother to Peter (Jennifer) and Kim. Loving uncle to Taylor, Braeden, Sarah, and Emma.

Mike retired in 2020 after 32 years of teaching in secondary schools in Durham. Teaching was his passion, which led him to a career in education. He loved the challenges of educating the next generation in a safe and nurturing environment. Mike is remembered by countless students and colleagues as a life-changing influence. Mike had a great sense of humour and believed in having fun in everything he did.

Another passion was rugby. It was in Mike's blood as a player and coach. He played rugby at Anderson CVI, York University, and Oshawa Vikings. After that, Mike coached rugby at the high school, club, and rep levels. Most rugby players remember his favourite place to stand was in the in-goal area.

A great friend, coach, and mentor to many, Mike lived by the code of Clayton's four things:

  1. Don't whine, don't complain, don't make excuses.
  2. There is no substitution for doing the simple things well.
  3. Play in the present.
  4. It's all about how you finish.

We would like to thank the staff at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, and Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their care and compassion for Mike, specifically Dr. Marta Davidson, Dr. Vasanthamohan, and Peggy Chen NP, among many others.

In lieu of flowers, we request donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, or Lakeridge Health Oshawa.
