Ray Gordon VanMeer

1932 - 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Ray VanMeer announces his sudden passing on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at the age of 92. Ray was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor VanMeer and a cherished father to Randy (Donna), Rick (Karen), and the late Patti Kingdom (Dan).

Proud grandfather to Laura Langstaff (Cory) and Nicole VanMeer, Ray was also a dear brother to Don VanMeer and the late Betty McKinnon, and brother-in-law to Joan Haass (Herman). A retiree of General Motors, Ray enjoyed fishing, bowling, and a good game of euchre or crib, always ready to challenge friends and family alike.

A private graveside service will be held at Bowmanville Cemetery. In Ray's memory, donations may be made to the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation or Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation.

Shirley Yvonne Hasiuk

1937 - 2024

Shirley Yvonne Hasiuk (nee Bromell), born on June 10, 1937, to Elgin and Vera Bromell, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, reuniting with her best friend and husband, William.

Shirley was the beloved mother of Jewel (David) Johnston and Wayne (Karen) Hicks, and the cherished grandmother of Chris (Cherri), Darrin, Jennifer, and Dwayne. She was also the adored great-grandmother of Harleigh and Wyatt. Shirley, the eldest of her siblings, shared a special bond with each of them: William (predeceased) (Phyllis) Bromell, Theighn (predeceased) (Carol) Bromell, Gary (Joan, predeceased) Bromell, and Linda (Dayne) Lycett.

Known for her hardworking nature and enormous heart, Shirley selflessly put everyone before herself. She spent countless hours tending to her greenhouse and gardens on the farm and enjoyed canning her harvests in the fall. Ever adventurous, she could be found chasing cows in her nightgown or setting off on road trips, undeterred as long as there was gas in her tank. Her door was always open, welcoming family, friends, neighbors, and anyone looking to share a chat and a laugh.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Kevin and Nancy, whose kindness and care meant so much to Shirley. Heartfelt appreciation also goes to Shirley's niece Deneen and sister Linda for their unwavering support and companionship over the last two years.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of choice.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at Union Cemetery in Oshawa on Monday, November 18, at 1:00 pm, with a reception to follow.

Edward “Ted” George Polley

December 18, 1957 - November 6, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Edward “Ted” George Polley on November 6, 2024, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, at the age of 66. Ted will be greatly missed by his loving partner, Wendy Hogg, his stepdaughter Bethany (Mike), and his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, and Logan. He was a cherished brother to Bonnie Colwell and Rosalie Polley, and a loving uncle to Kimberly Glassford (Bill) and Tanya Colwell, as well as a great uncle to Ryan and Baylee Glassford. Ted was also loved by his father-in-law, Oral Hogg, and his many in-laws.

Predeceased by his parents, George and Ruby Polley, his mother-in-law, Joyce Hogg, and his brother-in-law, Irwin Colwell, Ted’s memory will be held dear by his family and friends. Known for his warm heart and love for the outdoors, Ted spent many summers relaxing on the deck at his trailer at Buckslide Park in Minden.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at a later date to honor his memory and the joy he brought to those around him.

Terence (Terry) Frederick Edwin Giles

1929 - 2024

Terence (Terry) Frederick Edwin Giles passed away peacefully at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay on November 5, 2024, at the age of 95. Terry was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Jean Giles (nee Mason), and leaves behind a loving family and cherished memories.

Terry was a devoted father to Lynn (David) and Karen (Jeff), a proud grandfather to Samantha (Chris) and Sarah (Kris), and a great-grandfather to Ben, Laura, Leah, and Monroe. His legacy of kindness, wisdom, and love will live on through them.

A retiree of the City of Oshawa’s Planning and Development Department, Terry also proudly served as a past member of the Ontario Regiment, Oshawa Legion Branch 43, and as the Charter President of the Oshawa Parkwood Rotary Club.

In accordance with Terry’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of the geriatric and palliative care units at Ross Memorial Hospital, as well as the kind team at Kawartha Lakes Retirement Residence.

Marija Kemperle

1939 - 2024

Marija Kemperle passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, at the age of 85. She was the beloved mother of Cindy Marie Kemperle (Jean Luc St. Amant), Linda Hampson (Sean Penhale), and Catherine McInnis, and a loving mother figure to Deanna Bottrell.

Marija was a devoted grandmother to Tonya Fern Marie Cadieux (Paul) and Kyle St. Amant, and a cherished great-grandmother to Soren and Lilliana. She was the dear sister of Stanislava Kemperle and Anica Kemperle, and is predeceased by her siblings Janez “Ivan” Berce, Joze Kemperle, and Anton “Tony” Kemperle. Marija’s life was enriched by the lifelong friendship of Karen Nicholson, who will miss her dearly.

Marija shared her passion for cooking with the community as a longtime chef at Sisters Eatery/Millies and was the former owner of Venezia Restaurant in Orono, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and culinary excellence.

A memorial service to celebrate Marija's life will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street, Bowmanville, Ontario. Friends and family are welcome to join in honoring her memory.

Ted Sallows

1941 - 2024

Ted Sallows passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on October 25, 2024, at the age of 83. Ted was the beloved husband of the late Dianne Sallows, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years. He was a devoted father to Jeff Sallows and Sonya (Mike) Housley, and he was predeceased by his son, Ed.

Ted was a cherished Papa to his grandchildren Derek (Brooke), Dylan (Emily), Morgan, Lauren, Brooke, and a proud great-grandfather to Lennon. He was a dear brother to Randy (Marion) and was predeceased by his brother, Dan. Ted was also predeceased by his parents, Morley and Trudy Sallows.

Ted will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His kindness and warmth touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of love and treasured memories.

At Ted’s request, no formal funeral service will be held. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home.

Marija Kemperle

1939 - 2024

Marija Kemperle passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, at the age of 85. Marija was a devoted mother to Cindy Marie Kemperle (Jean Luc St.Amant), Linda Hampson (Sean Penhale), and Catherine McInnis, and was a beloved figure to Deanna Bottrell, who was like a fourth daughter to her. She was a loving grandmother to Tonya Fern Marie Cadieux (Paul) and Kyle St. Amant, and a cherished great-grandmother to Soren and Lilliana.

She was the sister of the late Janez “Ivan” Berce, the late Joze Kemperle, Stanislava Kemperle, Anica Kemperle, and the late Anton “Tony” Kemperle. Marija will be fondly remembered by her very best lifelong friend, Karen Nicholson.

Marija had a remarkable career as a chef, most notably as a longtime and loyal chef at Sisters Eatery/Millies and as the former owner of Venezia Restaurant in Orono. Her love for cooking and her dedication to her craft will be remembered by many in the community.

A memorial service to honor Marija’s life will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street, Bowmanville. Family and friends are welcome to gather to celebrate her life and the joy she brought to others.

Stewart Arnold Sanderson

1958 - 2024

In loving memory of Stewart Arnold Sanderson, affectionately known as “Grizz,” who passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the age of 66.

Beloved life partner of 31 years to Sandra Ellis, Stewart was a loving father to Miranda and a dear brother to Steven (Heather) and Debroah (Bob) Martin. He was a proud stepfather to Chad Ellis (Stephanie) and Breann Ellis-Kober, and a cherished uncle to Becki (Leon) Brown, nephew Steven, and three great-nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Barb and Milton (Sandy) Sanderson, he will be deeply missed by his treasured friend Kathleen Denyer, whose kindness meant the world, and by Linda Brown-Bond for her support and guidance.

Stewart had a passion for writing, playing music, and driving, and he was a valued employee at Mackie Transportation Inc. His sense of humor, described as “warped,” and his joyful spirit will be fondly remembered by those who knew him. In his own words, “I was a helluva dancer.”

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Shure and his team, Nurse Christina from Paramed, and the Durham Cancer Centre for their compassionate care.

Per his wishes, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The RS McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre or the Humane Society of Durham Region would be greatly appreciated.

1956 - 2024

In loving memory of Mr. Rick Powell, who passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 68. A retired GM employee, Rick will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Beloved father of Jamie (Laura) and Allison (Tim), and loving papa of Brandon and Alivia, along with his cherished fur baby, Mouse. Rick leaves behind his parents, Maureen and Russell Powell, as well as his siblings Patti, Kelly, and the late Colleen.

Donald Frank Salmonds

October 18, 1937 - October 30, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Frank Salmonds announces his passing on October 30, 2024, at the age of 87, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Born on October 18, 1937, to Frank D. Salmonds and Mazie Salmonds, Don was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with loved ones.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 68 years, Nancy May Salmonds, and his children Jim (Lorna), Frank, and Kerri (Craig). Don was a proud grandfather to Christopher, Danielle, Ryan, Jacob (d. 2021), Dawn, Jason, and Jamie, and a cherished great-grandfather to Charley, Savannah, and Jacob. He is also survived by his younger brothers Ken and Jim Salmonds, and was predeceased by his sister Patricia Hapgood (d. 2019).

Don’s life was filled with family adventures, from weekends at the trailer with Jim and Kerri’s families to trips abroad to visit Frank. His family was at the heart of all he did, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

A private service will be held, followed by burial at Bowmanville Cemetery on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
