Edward "Fast Eddie" Hakonson

August 17, 1949 - March 7, 2025

Ed “Fast Eddie” Hakonson passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 7, 2025, at the age of 75, with his beloved wife of 50 years, Hiedi, by his side.

Ed is survived by his four children, Jamie (Jason) Hakonson-Hathaway, Jessica (Kevin) Hackert, Brett (Erica) Hakonson, and Brad (Leslie) Hakonson, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Hannah, Macy, Hudson, Maxson, Scarlet, Lawson, Berlin, Dublin, Adelaide, and Avery.

He is also survived by his mother, Audrey, and sisters, Debby (Rainer) and Karen. He was predeceased by his father, Arne, and his brother, Dale. Ed was a beloved uncle to Emily (Kyle), Erin, Sarah, Laura (Gord), Karla (Jon), and Hannah (Sean).

Born in South Porcupine, Ontario, Ed faced challenges with polio as a child, spending years at the Hospital for Sick Children. After moving to Markham, he made a name for himself as a fearless competitor, racing snowmobiles in the winter and dominating the sideroads of Stouffville and Markham in his cars.

Ed never let his disability define him or hold him back. His passion for design and motorsports led him to establish Choko Motorsports in 1983, specializing in snowmobile apparel before expanding into licensed motorsports apparel. His business ventures included Choko, Fast Eddie Authentic Apparel, a successful NASCAR race team—EHR, and a lodge in Northern Ontario.

Beyond business, Ed was deeply committed to his community. He founded the Stouffville Spirit Jr. A Hockey Club and played a pivotal role in numerous initiatives, from recreational park development and robotics programs to local fairs and charitable support. His lifelong dedication to Easter Seals Canada began in 1959 when, at age 10, he served as a Timmy Ambassador, advocating for children with disabilities. Throughout his life, he remained a dedicated supporter of the organization that had once helped him and his family.

Among all his accomplishments, Ed was most proud of his family. His energy and enthusiasm were infectious, leaving everyone he met feeling inspired. His legacy is one of resilience, generosity, and an unbreakable spirit.

“Your only limitations are the ones you think you have.”

A private family service will be held, with a gathering of family and friends to take place in early spring.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing teams at Southlake Regional Health Centre and Uxbridge Cottage Hospital for their compassionate care. They also deeply appreciate the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Easter Seals Canada or Evergreen Hospice in Ed’s memory.
