Dr. Barry John Hood

1938 – January 24, 2025

With great sadness, we announce that Dr. Barry John Hood passed away peacefully on January 24th at the age of 86, two years after the passing of his wife, Irene.

Barry grew up on a farm north of Melbourne, Australia. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and became a dentist living in Geelong. He then traveled to the other side of the world and settled down in Toronto, Canada, to practice dentistry. His passion for dentistry was so great that he also taught at the University of Toronto, guiding and inspiring future dentists.

Barry enjoyed life to the fullest with a love for opera and traveling the world—often to attend even more operas, particularly the Bayreuth Festival. He was a proud supporter of the Canadian Opera Company and the Toronto Wagner Society. He also enjoyed quiet time at home cooking, watching movies, and reading from his extensive personal library.

With his wife Irene, Barry loved to host parties and frequently welcomed out-of-town friends and family to stay in their home. He was a gracious host, always sharing entertaining stories, and his guests were never lacking for food or drink.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter Ashley, son-in-law Evan, grandson Oliver, sister Kathy (Prec), brother-in-law John, and multitudes of friends and extended family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Canadian Opera Company.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Aftercare Cremation & Burial Service Limited.
