STEWART, Ian Malcolm - Passed away suddenly at home on December 7, 2023, at the age of 95.
Ian was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ella (1939-2021).
He is survived by two sons, Hamish (Susan Taylor), and Graham (Iris He); grandchildren, Sean Karnani-Stewart (Raisha), Jessica (Gretchen Thomas), Matthew, and Colin; sisters-in-law, Gladys Mason (Gregory) of Dartmouth, NS, Marilyn Taylor of St. John's, NL, Bev Rowe of Conception Bay South, NL; and brother-in-law, Rick of Bristol, England.
Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Ian worked in western and northern Canada until he met and married Ella Rowe in Toronto in 1959. In the 1960s, Ian worked as a meteorologist in Winnipeg, MB and Gander, NL. In 1970, he began studying history in St. John's, and Ian and Ella settled in Toronto in 1974.
A graduate of the University of Alberta, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the University of Toronto, Ian served for many years as a devoted and inspirational teacher of Canadian history in the pre-university program at Woodsworth College, University of Toronto.
Ian was also an amateur radio operator (VA3UF) and skilled electronics and computer hobbyist, building PCs for his grandchildren when he was in his 70s.
After retiring in the mid-1990s, Ian and Ella spent their time caring for their grandchildren and travelling in Europe, with particularly extensive visits to France. Ian had a deep knowledge of Canadian, American, and European history and art, and a keen interest in contemporary politics; we will all miss our conversations with him on these and many other topics.
At Ian's request, there will be no funeral. A memorial celebration of Ian's life will be held in the new year. The family would like to thank caregivers, Anna Lisa Koenne, Lyka Alejo, Sam Carona, and Danielle Roy, for their help keeping Ian comfortable and happy at home over the last two years.
In Ian's and Ella's memory, donations to the ALS Society of Ontario or The Daily Bread Food Bank would be appreciated.
