Rev. Dr. George Langford James

June 3, 1929 – December 5, 2024

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Rev. Dr. George Langford James, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Born in Romney, George grew up in Southwestern Ontario, where his parents, Rev. P.E. (Will) James and Zella James, and older sisters Mary, Ruth, and Marjorie, nurtured his love of music, literature, and devotion to service and community.

George was ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1955 after earning his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor (later Master) of Divinity degrees from Victoria College and Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. His ministry took him to pastoral charges in Saskatchewan and various locations in Ontario. Along with congregational work, George took on leadership roles with the United Church’s National Office, General Council, and Toronto Conference. In 1991, he was honoured by the University of Toronto’s Victoria University with a Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa.

In 1966, George met Marilyn Morgan, the Art Editor for Sunday School Publications at United Church House. They married in 1968 and enjoyed 56 years of a loving and like-minded partnership. Together, they shared a love of travel, music, art, friendship, and, most of all, family.

A beloved figure in every community he served, George was known for his thought-provoking sermons, his gift for nurturing leadership, and his commitment to social justice, equality, and inclusivity. His deep appreciation for classical music and love for nature, especially during his time paddling and sailing in Muskoka, were constant sources of inspiration.

George is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; his children, Christine (Sandy Rennie) and Robin (Mara O’Brien-James); grandchildren Zella James (predeceased by grandson Max James), Carolyn and Suzanne Prouse; great-granddaughter Nora; and many loving nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, kindness, and his contagious love of laughter.

A memorial service to celebrate George’s remarkable life will be held on May 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Bell’s Corners United Church, Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Basic Funerals.
