MACKETT, Kathleen (KAY) -
September 12, 1926 - August 28, 2023
Peacefully, from complications due to a fall.
Predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Mackett (1965), and her brother, Fr. William Bourke, SJ (2019).
Survived by her children, Judy (Richard) and David; sisters, Sheila Bourke McGinity and Eileen Wood (Barry); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and one great-grandnephew.
Born and raised in Halifax, N.S. to William and Mary Edith Bourke, Kay moved to Montreal in the 1950s, where she worked in CN Rail's public relations department. When Ken, her husband of just over two years, died in 1965, Kay – bolstered by a resolute determination that carried her throughout her life – set about the task of raising two children while holding a full-time job.
In 1972, Kay moved her family to Toronto, where she worked in various administrative capacities until her retirement from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1991. In retirement, Kay volunteered with several organizations, including the Sunshine Centres for Seniors and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Green Thumb, Fine Arts and Gift Shop).
She attended lectures at the Women's Canadian Club of Toronto and the University of Toronto's Later Life Learning and enjoyed Music in the Afternoon with the Women's Musical Club of Toronto. Kay lived in her own home up to her last few days and just two weeks shy of her 97th birthday.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5th. The Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 24 Cheritan Avenue, Toronto, on Wednesday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m.
Donations to Canadian Jesuits International or the Women's Musical Club of Toronto would be a fitting tribute.
