Morris M. Kertzer
2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Morris M. Kertzer on September 1, 2024, at the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa, in his 94th year. Morris was one of Canada’s most prestigious lawyers, a graduate of the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta. Called to the Bar at age 24, he was one of Canada’s youngest graduating lawyers at the time.
An expert in Civil Litigation and Construction Law, Morris spent most of his career in private practice in Ottawa and later joined Lang Michener as in-house counsel. He was influential in the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, involved in key decisions, including the design of Canada’s national flag.
Morris was known for his generosity, representing charitable causes and offering his time and expertise freely. A colleague described him perfectly: “He was a smart, feisty lawyer with a big heart.” He will be sorely missed both professionally and personally.
Morris is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Anita, and daughters Deedee (Deidre), Gael, and Sharon Grace, all of Ottawa. He is also survived by his sisters Phyllis Zelcer and Ruby Fruitman (Mel) of Toronto, Ontario. Morris (Morry) will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and dear lifelong friends.
