TOLTON, Ruth Anne Elizabeth
On Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at Brockville General Hospital (Garden St), Brockville, Ontario. Born June 8, 1927 in Montreal, Quebec. Daughter of the late Colonel Howard Grant (Spike) Thompson and Edythe Anna Edna Glazier. Married to William (Tub) Tolton of Brockville for 62 years. Mother of David (Heather), Lesley and Christopher. Proud Grandmother of Benjamin (Victoria) Tolton, Matthew (Kate) Tolton and Cameron Tolton.
As the daughter of a military father, Ruth Anne moved frequently around the province of Ontario as a youngster. Without question her favorite spot was the family cottage located just west of Brockville on the St Lawrence River. After high school, her love and interest of animals allowed her to graduate from the University of Guelph (OAC ’53 – Animal Husbandry). Ruth Anne and her family chose to move permanently to the St Lawrence cottage site in 1967.
During the 70’s, whenever Ruth Anne’s time was not focused on raising her family she was deeply engaged in many volunteer organizations and social groups. She took true enjoyment in helping others and did so by volunteering for Books for Shut Ins, Meals on Wheels (30 Year Pin), Loaves & Fishes, Altar Guild at St. Lawrence Anglican Church and visitations at both Sherwood Park Manor and Rosedale Nursing Homes. She was awarded The Ontario Medal For Good Citizenship in 1978.
Ruth Anne loved the river and would take every opportunity to be in it, on it or beside it. Sailing brought her much pleasure. She was an avid gardener and kept her kitchen supplied with fresh vegetables all summer. She loved music of all forms but especially her decades of church choir participation. Her sense of adventure was evident in her enjoyment of travelling around the globe, spending winters in Hawaii or taking a simple drive along the back roads.
She will be sadly missed and we trust that she has moved on to a place of joy. She certainly made life better for everyone who knew her.
Visitation will be at Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl St. East, Brockville on Friday October 9, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, 80 Pine St. in Brockville.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St Lawrence Anglican Church or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care would be appreciated.
