GRAY, Donald M., Major-General (Ret), RMC, PFSC, B.Sc, M.Eng, P.Eng, CD
My father, known as Don or Donnie, was born in Kingston in 1932.
He was the son of the late Capt. W.P.G. Gray and Marguerite Jamieson and the youngest brother to Heather (d.), Patricia (d.), Ross (d.)(Irene Bird), William (Mary Myers), Peggy (George Murray) and Bette (Jake Fowler), all originally of Kingston.
He had many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dad married in 1957 to ’Dene (a Lawrence of Belleville) KGH nurse, watercolour painter, golfer and mother to myself (Peter) and younger brother Michael.
Don Gray was always a proud Kingstonian, and not shy about letting people know this. He graduated from Rideau Public School, KCVI, RMC and Queen’s. He played football and basketball for KCVI and baseball at the Cricket Field.
In summers, he worked for Alcan, Fort Henry Guard, and Fashion Craft, before he entered college.
For my brother and myself, getting help with homework (especially Math and Science) was never a problem. Our cerebral father held Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in civil engineering.
While graduating in 1954 from Royal Roads Military College in Victoria BC, he complemented his academic achievements with membership on the football and basketball teams. He was that school’s heavyweight boxing champion.
It was sometimes hard for my brother and me to live up to Dad’s expectations in school and sports, but we always knew we had his support.
Dad was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy in 1956 as a Sub-Lieutenant and served in the Navy until the entire military was integrated into the newly created Canadian Forces in 1968. He retired as a two-star General in 1987.
Career ambition took his family through twelve moves in five Canadian provinces (several more than once) and to the USA. His final work assignment was as a diplomat in Europe.
In Brussels, while Mom soaked up all the pomp and glitter of life with ambassadors and chargé d'affaires, Dad looked forward to the day when he would finally return to the place that made him happiest, Kingston.
Dad and Mom returned to Kingston for good in 1990. There, they centred their lives around Cataraqui Golf & Country Club in summer, but escaped the cold of winter by migrating to Northern Florida. When they stopped going south, Kingston was their home year-round.
At home, Dad kept growing and exploring by mastering various techniques on his computer. He also gave priority to going out with friends he had known from childhood. These were Dad's true friends, and the support they gave to one another during the twilight of their lives was very important to him.
In his life, my father had worked, lived, and travelled around the continent and the world, but his heart had never left Kingston.
My Dad died on Monday July 16, 2018.
At my father’s request, cremation will be immediate and there will be no visitation.
His ashes will be placed in the Gray family plot in the Cataraqui Cemetery in a private ceremony.

FOSTER, Barbara Collier - Passed away on July 16, 2018.
Barbara was born on July 29, 1920; so like her mother, she lived almost 100 years.
Her parents were both of Scottish descent, her father (Colin Collier) via South Africa and her mother (Rebecca MacKenzie) a Gaelic-speaking native of Cape Breton Island.
She grew up on the family farm in Coxheath with her older brother Jim and younger sister Anna.
She had memories of washing hundreds of milk bottles every afternoon, to be filled the next day, and picking quarts of strawberries early summer mornings to be ready for market.
She was an exceptional student in a scenario, where on occasion as a young child, she was the only pupil in a single room schoolhouse.
She became the first member of her family to pursue post-secondary school education obtaining a scholarship to study Home Economics at Acadia University in Wolfville, NS.
Following that success she secured federal funding for her M.Sc. to study at McDonald College, the Agricultural School of McGill University and then began study on her Ph.D., which she put aside, following her marriage to Jack Mutch, a Bank of Nova Scotia employee.
Following his promotion, the couple moved to Toronto with Jack working at the bank's main branch - King and Bay. In Toronto they had 2 children, Alan (Barbara) of Winnipeg and Graham (Fran) of Kingston.
Following the birth of the children, they built a custom designed home in Clarkson, just west of Toronto.
The idyllic world of upward mobility came crashing down when Jack died suddenly in 1959.
Barbara, using the skill set obtained from her university training immediately went to work to support her young sons aged 5 and 7.
Initially as an Assistant Dietitian at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto and then, when the opportunity arose, to become Head Dietitian at Kingston General Hospital a position she held for many years.
Here she supervised over 150 employees to feed patients and staff at the hospital.
She maintained a strong love for her childhood home in Cape Breton and flew her children to the family farm at the start of every summer and then joined them when she had her holiday break.
Summers were filled with happy times for the extended family and friends; boating, swimming, waterskiing and fishing on the Sydney River that the farm property backed onto.
In Kingston she met and married Ron Foster and established a blended family.
Over their 38 years together, they enjoyed their winter retreat at Lake Seminole near Tampa Florida accompanied by the current in a series of dogs.
She and Ron were responsible for organizing the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for the entire park for multiple seasons.
After Ron’s death in 2003, Barbara sold their condo, and always pragmatic, soon deliberately chose assisted living and gave up her right to drive a car.
In this environment she maintained a keen interest in playing bridge – usually going to a game with a ‘quarter and returning with a dollar’.
Over the past decade she had progressive loss of cognitive abilities but still managed to play bridge and attempt the daily crossword.
She received dedicated care from son Graham and the staff at Providence Manor.
Noteworthy in her long life was her ability to provide strength and focus to all those in her sphere of influence, but especially to her male partners and sons.
They all became stronger and more complete for the association.
As her grandchildren Jonathan and Emily noted she very rarely complained.
Her response was that it wouldn’t help even if she had.
This rare, sensible and stoic woman will be dearly missed.
A private family internment will occur.
