Dorothy (Dora) Kozelj

1926 – November 23, 2024

KOZELJ, Dora Maria (née Jaklic) – Passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Unionville on November 23, 2024, in her 99th year. Predeceased by her husband Lou Kozelj and sister Zdenka Jaklic, she was the loving mother to Tom, Kathy (Mike), Barb (Jim), and Monika, and the proud grandmother of Colin, Tyler, Jason, and Shannon.

Born in Podborst, Sevnica, in the former Yugoslavia (now Slovenia) in 1926, Dora grew up in Ljubljana and cherished her summers on the family farm near her birthplace. The Second World War shaped her life, and she fled her homeland with her future husband Lou, eventually emigrating to Canada in 1948. They built a life together, first in Toronto and then Pointe Claire, Quebec, raising four children.

Dora was a remarkable woman, heavily involved with her children's swimming and community activities. She and Lou built a family cottage at Lac Gustave in the Laurentians, which became a beloved summer retreat. Dora embraced adventure, taking up cycling, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing later in life. She even went parasailing in the Seychelles and hot-air ballooning in Kenya.

After returning to Toronto following Lou’s passing in 1991, Dora continued skiing trips, traveling, and creating cherished memories for her family. She remained active and independent into her 90s, enjoying long walks and her love of cooking and baking. Her family treasured her famous potice, macaroni à la Pol Martin, and apple pie.

Dora’s last home was at Sunrise of Unionville, where she received expert care from the compassionate staff. The family is deeply grateful for the love and kindness shown to her.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A small celebration of life will be held when the family can come together. Personal condolences and reminiscences can be shared at www.dixongarland.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dora’s memory may be made to Sprint Senior Care Toronto.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home.
