William Daniel Lee
August 25, 1944 - November 12, 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of William Daniel Lee, known fondly as Dan Lee, on November 12, 2024, at the age of 80.
Born to John and Margaret Lee on August 25, 1944, in Parry Sound, Ontario, Dan dedicated his life to service, community, and family. A career police officer with the Ontario Provincial Police, Dan retired as a Sergeant after 31 years of exemplary service. His postings took him from Geraldton to Japan, to Upsala, and finally to Sudbury.
While stationed in Japan for Expo '70, Dan met the love of his life, Susan, who was representing New Zealand at the New Zealand Pavilion. After a whirlwind romance and marriage in New Zealand, Dan and Susan settled in Sudbury, where they raised their children, Catherine and Timothy. Dan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose family was his pride and joy.
Dan’s contributions extended far beyond his career. A graduate of Laurentian University (1987), Dan earned numerous accolades, including the OPP Commissioner’s Citation (1994), awards from the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, and civic awards from the City of Greater Sudbury. He was inducted into the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame in 2019 and received the YMCA Canada Peace Medal in 2007 for his outstanding community work.
He was instrumental in numerous initiatives, including co-founding Operation Red Nose and the Bridge of Nations, co-chairing the Ontario Summer Games (2010), and playing a significant role in the Special Olympics’ National Summer Games. As a community leader, Dan was involved with the Salvation Army, Sudbury Sports Council, and Holy Redeemer Church, among many other organizations. He remained actively engaged in community activities until his passing.
Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; his daughter, Catherine (Dan); his son, Timothy (Candace); and his cherished grandchildren, Joshua and Emily. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret, and his sister, Rosemary (Joe) Warren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Groves Memorial Hospital in Fergus, ON. Dan’s dedication and impact on those around him will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
