KIRKCONNELL, Marjorie (née Smith) - At the age of 91, Marjorie left us for eternity on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.
She said that to her, eternity is "where the ocean meets the sky" so whenever we look at that horizon we’ll remember her.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marjorie came to Canada in the 1940’s to study at McMaster University in Hamilton where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and met her husband James Walter Kirkconnell (deceased 2001) when they both were acting in a production of ‘The Barretts of Wimpole Street’.
Books and literature and the arts were lifelong interests. Marjorie wrote short stories, taught evening courses in Canadian literature, and worked at the Oshawa Library.
She was an active member of the University Women’s Club, the Durham Council for the Arts, and Oshawa Friends of the Library, and was a recipient of the Durham Region YWCA Woman of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture.
Dearly missed by daughters Holly (Eduardo) and Heather (Peter), grandchildren Summer and Daniel, and friends and relatives in Canada and the United States.
Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Hillsdale Estates who cared so well for Marjorie from 2003 until the end. Thanks also to her loyal friend Jeanette Haywood and to the members of Kingsview United Church who visited regularly.
According to Marjorie’s wishes, friends and family are invited to share memories at a reception at McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. East, Oshawa (905-433-5558) on Saturday, December 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Private burial.
Messages of condolence / remembrance can be sent to makfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Oshawa Public Libraries would be appreciated.
