With sorrow, we announce that Mary Elizabeth Nicol (née Robertson) passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 20, 2023, in the loving embrace of her family.
She shared 59 years of devoted marriage with her late husband, Wesley M. Nicol.
Her large, wonderful extended family will deeply mourn Mary, but most especially her children, Bruce (Karen), Heather (Martin), Ian (Wendy) and Janet (Peter); and her 12 grandchildren, Rosanna (Nick), Alex (Nada), Oliver and Marielle Nicol; David and Nicola Protetch; Mark, Carolyn and Meredith Nicol; Emmet Robins; and Myles and Austin Wall.
Her delightful great-granddaughter, 'Miss J' Josephine Brown, brought great pleasure during her last years. Mary was very close to her sister, Joan Robertson, who provided a lifetime of shared laughter and years of care.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Beatrice Robertson; her sister, Anne Christie; and her nephew, Bill Christie. She will be missed by her beloved niece, Kathie Brown; her brother, David (Monica, deceased); and her extended family and community of friends.
Mary was born and raised in Ottawa, and was a proud Canadian who read voraciously about our people and history.
Mary was a lifelong optimist and also a worrier. She loved giraffes and orangutans, her amazing grandchildren, reading biographies (and lending them), watching the Senators and the Jays, and taking blurry photographs while away on her many trips and adventures. Having braved a long journey with Parkinson's disease, Mary was grateful to the Champlain Regional MAID Network team for their compassion.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, 134 Glebe Ave., Ottawa, followed by a reception.
