Donald "Don" McCaffrey

1930 - December 16, 2024

The family of Donald (Don) McCaffrey is deeply saddened to announce his passing on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the age of 94. Don was the son of Duncan Roland McCaffrey and Macey Louise (Husted) McCaffrey. He is survived by his brother Roland, sister-in-law Marianne, and his nieces and nephew: Sue (Steven Pettipiere), Sharon Court (Bruce), Kimberley Mansey-Walker (Robert), Jim, Pam (Fred Stride), and many great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Born in Woodstock in 1930, Don completed design studies at Ryerson College in Toronto. In 1963, he moved to Exeter to assist his father in the family business, Exeter Furniture, which manufactured church furniture. Don remained with the business until 2022 before relocating to Kingston to be closer to his family.

Encouraged by his sister-in-law Marianne, Don shared his wonderful bass voice by singing with several choirs, including the Exeter United Church Choir, Huronia Men's Chorus, London Fanshawe Symphonic Chorus, Blyth Festival Singers, and others. His contributions to the Blyth Festival extended beyond music; he volunteered as stage manager for over a decade, served on the Board of Directors, became Board Chair, and oversaw a $2.3 million theatre expansion. Don was renowned for his infectious laugh and warm smile.

Don's passion for driving allowed him to install furniture in churches from Alberta to Labrador and to regularly visit family in Kingston. He was deeply loved by his nieces and nephews, who cherished his kindness, humor, and memorable birthday cakes. His presence at Christmas gatherings and his treasured gifts, like Sugar and Spice chocolates, will be missed.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Don’s friends and neighbors for their support over the years, especially Barb Brock and Susan Smith. Special appreciation goes to Pamela, Don’s youngest niece, for her devoted care in his final days. Thanks are also extended to the staff at Kingsdale Chateau in Kingston for their kindness and comfort.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Haskett Funeral Home in Exeter in the spring of 2025. Donations in Don's memory may be made to the Blyth Festival, an organization close to his heart. Condolences may be shared at www.haskettfh.com.
