A. Roy Megarry
February 10, 1937 ~ November 18, 2024 (age 87)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of A. Roy Megarry on Monday, November 18th, 2024, at the age of 87. Roy passed peacefully at Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry, surrounded by his loving family.
Roy was a man of greatness, defined by qualities such as wisdom, compassion, humility, and a relentless drive to empower others. Born into poverty in Belfast, Ireland, he overcame adversity to achieve remarkable success in life and career. His accomplishments include earning a CPA degree, serving as Vice President of Corporate Development for TorStar, and becoming Chairman of *The Globe and Mail*. In 1993, he was awarded the Order of Canada for his Tools for Development program, which provided opportunities to entrepreneurs in developing nations. His humanitarian efforts extended to building wells in India, supporting schools in Lima, and empowering women in Jamaica.
Roy’s greatest love was his wife, Barbara, and his second love was Ireland, which he visited annually. His kindness, infectious humor, and unwavering dedication to helping others left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege to know him. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; children Andrew (Cecilia), Kevin (Lisa), and Lianne (Norm); grandchildren Tanya, Deanna, Prentice, Laura, Ryan, Matthew, Carina, and Evan; his sister Nan and brother George. Roy was predeceased by his grandson Greg and siblings Molly, Alice, Margaret, and Bill.
Visitation will take place at Low & Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Oak Ridges Hospice, Port Perry, or the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region.
Roy’s legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the countless lives he touched. May his memory inspire us to embody his compassion and dedication to others.
