June 14, 1935 - February 25, 2025
Clare Stanley Millage passed away peacefully at home in Bowmanville on February 25, 2025, surrounded by his dear wife, Ruth, and his immediate family.
Clare was born on June 14, 1935, on the family farm in Smith Township near Peterborough, ON, to Stanley and Hazel (née Darling) Millage.
The family moved to Lakefield in 1939, where Clare and his younger brother, Don, spent their childhood filled with adventures, including a pet raccoon, high school hockey, and mischievous pranks.
Clare began his career at the Bank of Montreal and was transferred to Belleville, ON, in 1957, where he met Ruth Goodman at a tobogganing party.
Their love story led to marriage in 1959, followed by moves to Hamilton and Burlington, where they raised their three sons: Doug, Stephen, and Glenn.
In 1966, Clare and Ruth purchased a cottage in the Kawarthas, which became their cherished retreat for decades. Over time, their family grew with the arrival of nine grandchildren, who also came to love the cottage as their special place.
Clare and Ruth retired to Trenton and spent years traveling the world, visiting the United States, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
Clare had a passion for woodworking, creating beautiful furniture, and building his model HO railway. He was known for his sharp wit, love of Canadian history, and dedication to family.
In 2024, Clare and Ruth settled at Vedanta Living Retirement Community in Bowmanville, where they were blessed with new friendships and a caring community.
A celebration of Clare’s life will be held in the coming months, with details to be updated as they are confirmed.
