MARSHALL, Nellie -
1918 - 2023
Peacefully, and surrounded by the love of her daughter and son, Nellie passed away, at age 105, the evening of Wednesday, November 15th, in her room at the Afton Park Place long-term care facility in Sarnia, Ontario.
Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred (Bill) Stewart Marshall, who passed away in 1988.
She was predeceased by her parents, Stefan and Hafia; and her five siblings: Kay, Ann, Marie, Jessie, and John.
Loving mother of Elizabeth Anne (Betty) and William Fred (Bill). She leaves grandchildren, Jerry and Shelly; and great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Tyson. Born Anastasia Klym on a farm near Chatfield, Manitoba, her parents immigrated to Canada from Ukraine.
In the 1940s, Nellie and her younger sister, Jostyna (Jessie), moved to Toronto, where she met her future husband, who moved from the United Kingdom to Canada just after the end of the Second World War. She was a waitress at various restaurants, and was among the first members of St. Giles Kingsway Presbyterian Church, 15 Lambeth Road, Toronto.
She was known for her Ukrainian cooking, which sold out at church sales. Through the church, she made food and took it to a mission in downtown Toronto.
Having a large garden in her backyard, she fervently believed in fresh food. She also enjoyed bowling in Toronto. In 2010, at age 92, she moved to Sarnia to be close to her daughter, Betty. After the move, her best years were at Landmark Village seniors residence and Afton.
She even served a few times at The Inn of the Good Shepherd mission. Her family will miss Nellie's spirit, which was feisty and indominable, yet very friendly.
Special thanks to all the staff at Afton, especially the Mayfair unit's nurses and PSWs, who over seven years established a special relationship with Nellie -- Afton's oldest resident.
Special thanks to Doctor Jason Hall. Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life to be announced .
