James Nixon
1931 – 2024
Peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2024, James Nixon of Vankleek Hill passed away at the age of 93 after a well-lived life. He was predeceased by his father, Leslie G. Nixon, his mother, Margaret E. Barton, his brothers Horace, Ken, and his sister Helen. He will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom loved him dearly. James is now reunited with his close friend Dougie Barton.
James’ life was filled with music and hard work on the family farm. At the age of ten, he began playing piano, and at fifteen picked up the fiddle, playing both instruments mostly by ear. James joined the McCrimmon Orchestra and loved to entertain at places like The Atlantic Hotel, The Sportsman Inn, curling clubs, and house parties. For over seven decades, he generously shared his musical talents, bringing joy to many and often playing alongside some of the area’s finest fiddlers. In 2011, James had the great honour of being inducted into the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame, a moment of immense pride and humble gratitude for him.
James spent his entire life on the Nixon Family Farm, where he cropped fields and was one of the first cash croppers in the area to dry corn. He lovingly raised his herd of registered Red Angus cows, always ensuring their well-being. A skilled and dedicated worker, James also spent 20 years working for Hydro One, where he knew every hydro line from Vankleek Hill to North Lancaster.
As per James’ wishes, a Graveside Service will take place in the spring at the Kirk Hill United Cemetery. For those who wish to make donations, contributions to The Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame or The Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society would be appreciated.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Hillcrest Funeral Home.
