COWIE, Elizabeth Anne Aileene Cowie
December 19, 1959 - June 25, 2026
With great sadness, the family announces the passing of Elizabeth Cowie on Thursday, June 25, 2026, after a long battle with cancer. She is now reunited with her husband, Keith Freemantle, and her parents, Margaret and Peter Cowie. She leaves behind her adored children, James Freemantle (Kara), Daveth Freemantle (Jessica), Keiran Freemantle, and Kerenza Freemantle (MacKenzie).
Music was one of Elizabeth’s greatest passions. She played numerous instruments beautifully, including the piano and the harp. Her home was constantly filled with the sound of her playing, often as she prepared for Sunday services at St. Andrew’s Chalmers, where, alongside her dear friend Richard, she led the music ministry for over three decades. Aside from music, there was almost always a book in her hand, or at least within arm’s reach, as anyone who has seen her library would confirm.
Elizabeth Anne Aileene Cowie will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched through her career as a lawyer and her volunteer work with the Uxbridge Soccer Club, the Uxbridge Skating Club, and Durham College. After the passing of her husband Keith in 2006, she raised four children with remarkable strength, resilience, and unconditional love. Her courage and devotion to her family will never be forgotten. She never hesitated to put others before herself and found joy in helping those around her.
As your choir would say: “Thank you for the music.”
