Peacefully, after a lengthy illness on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at the Extendicare Nursing Home in Lindsay, at age 89. Lorraine Haines Smith (nee Haines) beloved wife of Isaac Smith of Lindsay, formerly of Toronto, Newfoundland, Ajax, and Saintfield. Loving mother of Cathie and her husband Bruce Turner of Bracebridge, Larry Smith and his wife Angie of Bobcaygeon, Robert Smith and his wife Dawn of Port Perry, Colin Smith (deceased) of Calgary, and Danny Smith and his wife Jacalyn of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Loved grandma of Rebecca Butcher, Ryan Smith (Teresa), Tyler Smith (Sarah), Brittney and her husband John Milroy, Megan Smith, Amy Smith, Jesse and her husband Kyle Costello, Josiah Smith. Great grandma of Nessa and Finley Butcher, Karys Smith, Brayden Smith, Hunter Smith, Grant Milroy, Ethan Milroy, and Parks Costello. Dear sister of June Trentadue and her husband Marc of Toronto. Predeceased by her brothers Gordon, Dennis, Colin, infant brother Bobby, and her sister in law Ruth Haines. Aunt Lorraine will be missed by many nieces & nephews and especially her dear niece Gloria Morgan & her husband Boyd. Our mothers’ life was filled with devotion to her family. Born in Toronto. She later moved to Newfoundland with her beloved husband Ike where they continued to build a life and raise their growing family of five children. Their marriage lasted for more than 70 years, a true testament to love and commitment. They returned to Ontario in 1966 & settled in Ajax where Mom continued to nurture her family until they started to leave the nest to start families of their own. In 1983 they built a new home in Saintfield, where Mom operated a small bakery, delighting many with her delicious bread, butter tarts and other baked goods. Both she and Dad enjoyed meeting people especially in their travelling with the Eastern Star. This is most likely how they became known as “traveling sweethearts”. They were known also for their welcoming and warm hospitality. Mom was also a talented quilter, creating beautiful handmade quilts that will remain treasured keepsakes. Mom was also an exceptional cook whose gatherings were filled with laughter and great food. No one ever left their house hungry. Mom and Dad enjoyed their drives, especially as they travelled to their summer place in Port de Grave, NL for several years. Mom loved sitting on the deck and looking out at the ocean with Dad by her side watching for whales and the fishing boats coming and going. Mom, I think of you once again, running in the sand and playing in the waves of the Cobourg beach with Aunt Amy, enjoying an ice cream on a hot summer day. The family of Lorraine Smith will receive friends at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street in Lindsay on Saturday, March 21, 2026 from 12 – 2 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be held in the chapel at 2 p.m. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made by cheque through the funeral home to Kawartha Lake Food Source or a charity of your choice.
