Myrtle Elizabeth "Mert" Korkola Oinonen
February 20, 1947 – December 9, 2024
Myrtle (Mert) Elizabeth Korkola, age 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Port Arthur, ON, on February 20, 1947, Mert lived a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Mert's professional career was marked by her dedicated service at APPLE Credit Union, where she worked as a loans officer until her retirement in 2011. Her greatest joy, however, was her family and friendships. She shared a beautiful love story with her late husband Bob Korkola, with whom she pursued a shared passion for car racing, camping, and fishing at Sowden Lake. Together, they created a lifetime of treasured memories.
Mert was an adventurous spirit, enjoying travel to unforgettable destinations like Las Vegas, Mt. Rushmore, the Caribbean, Nashville, Hawaii, and numerous cruises. She loved bingo, card games, and sharing laughter with her lifelong friends. Her greatest treasure, however, was her family. She is survived by her daughter Sherri (Todd) Krywy, son Dale (Diana) Korkola, and grandchildren Justin Krywy (Jennifer), Kaitlyn Krywy, and Dana Korkola. She also leaves behind her loving partner Graham Smith and his family, who meant so much to her.
Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, Bob Korkola; her parents, Thelma and Ted Oinonen; and her brother, Ervin Oinonen. Her warmth, kindness, and witty sense of humor touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be remembered for her heartfelt, handwritten cards, her contagious laughter, and her Finnish SISU—a spirit of determination and resilience.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Humane Society, or a charity of choice. As per Mert's wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, she encourages everyone to cherish their loved ones and raise a toast in her honor.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for their exceptional care and support during Mert's final weeks. Her journey may have ended, but her love, laughter, and memories will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at Everest of Thunder Bay.
