Philip Grant Hinman
1940 - 2024
It is with profound sadness that the family of Philip Grant Hinman announces his passing in 2024 at home, surrounded by his loving wife Diana. Phil lived a full and enriching life, characterized by his love for family, education, literature, and the arts.
Phil was the eldest child of Grant and Fay Hinman. He is predeceased by his brother Scott and survived by his sisters Narda Dudley of North Carolina and Lori Leavitt of Lethbridge, Alberta. Married to Diana Hunter since 1970, Phil leaves behind their cherished children Susan, Justin, and daughter-in-law Emi. He was a proud grandfather to Edin and Reid, as well as a beloved uncle and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law Stephen, Larry, and Kathy, as well as Rose, and predeceased by Ann.
Growing up in Cardston, Alberta, Phil spent his youth immersed in the foothills, riding his pony, and helping with his father’s purebred Herefords. His early years instilled in him a deep love for the outdoors and hard work. A Queen’s Scout, Phil had an adventurous spirit and an insatiable curiosity. He pursued higher education with determination, earning degrees from the University of Lethbridge, the University of Alberta, and Western University in Ontario.
Phil dedicated his career to teaching English, spending the majority of his teaching years at Dunnville Secondary School. Known for his cowboy boots and high expectations, he inspired countless students to push past their limits. He introduced them to diverse authors, produced plays, organized class trips, and initiated Arts Night, leaving a lasting impact on many lives.
After retiring in 2001, Phil’s passions expanded to include gardening and orchids, earning him numerous prizes and recognition in orchid societies. He found joy in music, attending performances by the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, Brock’s music series, and the Buffalo Chamber Orchestra. His love for art led him and Diana to galleries worldwide, from the Rijksmuseum to the Barnes Foundation. A highlight of his retirement was attending the Chicago Jazz Festival.
Phil’s family was his greatest treasure. His unwavering support and loyalty created a foundation of love and security for all who knew him. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of many with his kindness and intellect.
