John Stanley Planeta

John Stanley Planeta passed peacefully at Lakeridge Health - Oshawa Hospital on January 21, 2025. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend and will be missed and remembered fondly by many.
Born June 24, 1936, in Oshawa, ON, Johnny (aka Yannick) was a first-generation Canadian and spent his entire life as a resident of Oshawa. Brought up by immigrant parents in a Polish-speaking home in a Polish neighbourhood, he was a child during the Great Depression and the Second World War, and he learned the meaning of hard work and struggle at an early age.
He was a mischievous student at Holy Cross School and attended high school at Oshawa Central Collegiate Institute, where he discovered team sports and excelled at football and basketball. John entered an apprenticeship program and became a tool and die maker at GM. He stressed the importance of education to his kids and supported them all until they completed university.
John was married for nearly 60 years and is predeceased by his loving wife, Kathleen (Kay) Dobos, and his big brother Jim. He will be missed by his dear sister Adele, his children John (Linda), Michelle Flynn, and Karen Amell (Derek), his seven grandchildren (Tyler, Matt, Chris, Michael, Shannon, Sydney, and Luke), five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored.
Post-retirement, John enjoyed summers with Kay at the family cottage on Rice Lake. Winters were spent traveling, including bus tours to Florida, Europe, and cruises to Hawaii. He had a long, happy, and healthy retirement. After COVID, John sold his home on Park Road N. and moved into Bloom Oshawa Retirement Community, where he met many new friends and reconnected with old ones.
