HILSON, Rose -
August 3, 1929 – May 26, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rose Hilson (née Floras), on Friday, May 26, 2023.
Beloved wife of the late Don Hilson (2011).
Born in Toronto on August 3, 1929 to Kaliope (née Nikolau) and Yovan Floras of Antartiko, Greece, she was the first of her immediate family to be born in Canada.
Growing up on Castleton Avenue, much of her social life revolved around the church and pictures abound of church picnics attended with her parents, brother and sister and her Uncle Florin and Aunt Olga and their son, Alex.
After graduating from Runnymede Collegiate, Rose was hired by the Government of Ontario to work in the Department of Travel and Publicity, where she eventually became secretary to the Deputy-Minister, Guy Moore.
During this time Rose met her future husband, Don, in Bala.
Rose and Don were married September, 1960.
Rose was warmly embraced by her new family and became especially close to her mother-in-law, who was also named Rose Hilson, causing no end of confusion.
In 1970, Rose moved with Don and their two children to Owen Sound and soon joined the Owen Sound Golf & Country Club and the Grey Granite Curling Club, where she made wonderful friends and memories.
After retirement, Rose became an active member of the St. George's Anglican Church Chancel Guild and enjoyed playing cards at Corbet Place, where she lived until moving into Kelso Villa for her final years.
She will be sorely missed by her children, Patricia and David and his wife, Maria; as well as by her cousin, Alex Flow (Judy); and her in-laws, Bob Hilson (Dale); and their families.
Rose was predeceased by her sister, Patricia Aman; her nephew, John Aman; and her brother, Fred Floras. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers who enriched Rose's final years.
A Celebration of Life for Rose will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 1049 4th Avenue East, Owen Sound, 519-376-3287, on Monday, June 12, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will be from 10:30 until 11:15 a.m., prior to the service. A Reception in the Church Parish Hall will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
