John Francis Schultz
April 11, 1935 - December 25, 2024
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of John Francis Schultz on December 25, 2024, just a few months shy of his 90th birthday. Born on April 11, 1935, in Brantford, Ontario, John leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and accomplishment.
Predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sylvia (2023), John will be greatly missed by his five children: Catherine (Ron), Loy, Robyn, Jaime, and Jonathan (known as John in adulthood); his grandchildren: Loy, Evan, Stefan, Gracyn, Charlie (Vickie), Nicole, Jacob, Emily, and Jonathan; and his great-grandchildren: Noah, Austin, and Rylee.
John’s life was filled with passion and dedication. He was a brilliant engineer, a creative fixer, and an avid collector of tools and materials. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1957 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, following in his father’s footsteps. He had a long and distinguished career with DuPont, starting in Shawinigan, Quebec, and later moving to Whitby, Ontario, where he became an expert in polyethylene extrusion. His work took him across the globe, including memorable trips to Hong Kong, Germany, India, and China.
John was also deeply committed to his community. As President of Whitby Arts, he played a key role in relocating the train station to establish the Station Gallery. A passionate sailor, John and Sylvia spent countless days aboard their sailboat, Protea, and were active members of the Whitby Yacht Club. He served as Commodore in 1996, contributed significantly to the club’s facilities, and earned the honour of having The Schultz Shed named after him.
The family kindly requests no flowers. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering giving fund.

We loved getting to know John and Sylvia when they would come to Calgary to see John and the kids. My husband Harold quickly bonded with John over woodworking and some shared projects. Now they can continue their talks in heaven. They were a wonderful couple and are missed.
