Irene Standring
May 1, 1930 – November 27, 2024
Irene Standring, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024, at the age of 94. Born in England, Irene's life was a testament to love and dedication to family.
Irene's early years were marked by the challenges of World War II, during which she developed a strong sense of resilience and compassion. She met her husband, Ron, at a dance shortly after the war, and they shared a loving marriage until his passing. Together, they raised four children: John, Brenda, Robert, and Annette, first in England and later in Canada, where they sought a better life for their family.
To know Irene was to know her family. Each member carries a piece of her vibrant spirit, her fiercely competitive nature, and her boundless love. She cherished every moment spent with her family and loved ones, weaving her passion for travel into these precious times. Family trips to Fern Resort, European bus tours, and winters in Florida were not just vacations; they were heartfelt adventures that brought everyone closer together. Irene also passed on her love of friendly competition, particularly in card games like bridge and euchre, where she was both a formidable opponent and a gracious partner.
Her legacy of love, strength, and kindness lives on through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Irene's life was a beautiful tapestry of stories, from her childhood above a candy shop to her later years surrounded by the family she adored.
Irene is survived by her children, John (Chris), Brenda (John), Bob (Mary-Jo), and Annette (Jim); her grandchildren, Claire, Robyn, Jacob, Nikki, Jackie, Taylor, Laura, and Krista; and her ten great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Ron, and her brother, Alan.
A celebration of Irene's life will begin with a visitation at Thornton Funeral Centre, 1200 Thornton Road, Oshawa, on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, 150 Victoria Street, Whitby, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, reflecting Irene's lifelong commitment to helping others.
Irene's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared in her life and supported them during this time. Irene will be greatly missed, always remembered, and forever loved.
