Born on January 10, 1939, in Aberystwyth, Wales, to Elizabeth (Bessie) and Wilfred Stephenson, John lived an extraordinary life full of achievements and adventure. During his school years, he excelled as a swimming captain, house captain, head choirboy, and air cadet, even qualifying as a glider pilot.
John attended the University College of Wales to study law. After graduation, he served with the Welch Regiment during his National Service, seeing active combat in Yemen as a lieutenant. At the young age of 22, he was elected to Aberystwyth Borough Council. His career began in journalism at the Western Mail in Cardiff, where he also appeared on radio and television.
In February 1970, John emigrated to Canada, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1973. His Canadian career included roles at the Toronto Telegram, Toronto Sun (as night editor), and as group publisher at Maclean-Hunter. In 1973, he launched a travel magazine and opened one of the first travel agencies specializing in last-minute travel, traveling extensively and collecting many stories, including encounters with King Charles and Sophia Loren.
In 1987, John shifted to publishing medical magazines and later started Motivations International Inc., advising European tourism boards. John’s sharp memory and genuine interest in people helped him build a vast network of colleagues and friends.
In 2007, John married Rhonda (Giroux) in Cobourg, and together they enjoyed traveling to many countries, especially the Czech Republic and Portugal. In retirement, John continued his passion for history and world politics.
John will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his wife Rhonda, his son Matthew (Kristan) and grandsons Benjamin and Owen, his daughter Rhian (Richard) and granddaughters Maisie and Lola.
