VARKONY, Thomas John - We are profoundly saddened to announce the sudden and peaceful passing of our beloved Thomas John Varkony after 92 incredible years of life, this past Saturday, October 14, 2023.
He was surrounded by his loving family and dear caregivers.
Tom is survived by his wife and best friend, Marianne, and his loving children Kathy (Anton), and Jacquie.
Tom is also survived by grandchildren Jared, Josh, Tristan, Katie, and his adored niece Gyorgyi (Can, Tuna).
He was predeceased by his parents Arpad and Ilona, and his sister Baba. Tom was born in Budapest in 1931 where he studied mechanical engineering at the renowned Muegyetem. In 1956, during the revolution, he escaped communist Hungary with his wife and was forever grateful for the opportunity to begin their new life of freedom in Canada.
Tom worked as a draftsman for Carrier Canada in the new field of refrigeration until he founded T.J. Varkony & Associates, a mechanical and electrical consulting firm in the early 1960's.
His expertise and engaging personality allowed him to grow his business into one of Canada's leading HVAC engineering firms, retiring after 27 years of loyal service.
We are forever indebted to Joanne, Rose and Florence for the endless love, care and joy they brought him in the final years of his life.
