Richard Copeland Vale
January 15, 1933 - March 23, 2025
In Loving Memory of Richard Copeland Vale, affectionately known as “Dick,” who passed away peacefully at the well-lived age of 92. Known by many as “The Lion in Winter,” Dick was a man of strength, grace, and enduring kindness.
Richard was predeceased by his beloved parents, James Sidney and Jean Emily Vale (née Copeland), his sister Barbara Canning, and his cherished daughter Kirsten Alexandra Vale. He is survived by his loving wife Bernice “Bunnie” (née von Platen); his children Randy, Karen (Bill), Kevin (Elaine), and Marcy; his sister Linda (Jake); and brothers-in-law Ken Canning and Bob von Platen (Carl). Dick also leaves behind grandchildren Colin (Bianca), Courtney (Jason), Meghan, and Rachael, and great-grandchildren Henry, Ingrid, Leo, Olivia, and Aria, as well as many nieces and nephews he loved dearly.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dick married his high school sweetheart and built a beautiful life rooted in family, nature, and adventure. His career led him from Winnipeg to major Canadian cities and then to Sevenoaks, England, where he spent 20 wonderful years. As a senior executive with Philips Electronics, Dick traveled widely and built a network of friendships around the world. He was also a devoted golfer, nature lover, and storyteller, who cherished time spent at Ingolf and Lake of the Woods.
Dick and Bunnie returned to Canada in 2006, settling at a peaceful lakeside home their family affectionately called “Greenacres.” There, he enjoyed retirement, bird watching, and visits from family and friends. He will be remembered for his wit, warmth, wisdom, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice or the Canadian Wildlife Federation are appreciated, in honour of Dick’s lifelong love for nature and wildlife.
Sleep well, dear Dick, and enjoy your reunion over the rainbow bridge with your best canine companions—Taffy, MacDuff, Tara—and all the grand-dogs who adored walking beside you.
