Larry Van Wormer

December 19, 2024

Larry Van Wormer passed away suddenly at home in Port Elgin, Ontario, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, after suffering a fall. He had been stoically battling Parkinson’s and heart diseases for several years, with symptoms becoming more acute in the weeks leading up to his passing. He was 77 years old.

Larry was born in Vedder Crossing, British Columbia, and is survived by his siblings Carole Eaton of Wasaga Beach, Ontario, and Ken Van Wormer of Chilliwack, British Columbia. He enjoyed a successful career as an engineer at the Bruce Heavy Water Plant, retiring in 2004.

Larry will be greatly missed by longtime friends Vic and Marilyn Day of Port Elgin, their children Keith Day, Karen Dunn, and Glen Day, and their grandchildren who brought him much joy. He was a beloved member of their extended family, known affectionately as "Uncle Larry."

An avid outdoorsman, Larry enjoyed hiking MacGregor Point Provincial Park and cheering on local sports teams. He shared a passion for cars and motorcycles with his friends, spending hours rebuilding engines and adjusting carburetors. Larry also cherished his travels, particularly exploring France with friends Phil Connor and Phil Low, known as “The Three Amigos,” and driving Route 66 from Chicago to LA.

Larry had a lifetime love of theatre, frequently attending the Stratford Festival Theatre, where his favorite productions were Restoration Comedies. He was also an avid reader, particularly of science fiction and fantasy, and a music enthusiast who crafted his own speakers to achieve the perfect sound.

Larry contributed generously to his community as a volunteer with the Horticultural Society, the Rail Trail, Meals on Wheels, and other organizations. Above all, he was a kind and loyal friend, always ready to lend a hand.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Port Elgin Branch of the Canadian Legion on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 1-4 p.m. In remembrance of Larry, his family invites you to perform random acts of kindness in his honor.

Memories and notes of condolence may be shared at T.A. Brown Funeral Home.
