Passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa surrounded by his loving family.

Adored husband of Emy Moreland.

Generous father of Heather and Andrew Butcher, Chris and Jeff Jackson and his wife Lindsay.

Proud Poppa Bill of Ava and Nolan Jackson.

Brother of Susan Mason and her husband Ralph.

Retired school teacher and former president of ETFO Durham. He was Referee in Chief for the Durham/York Football Officials Association.

A family man first and foremost, Bill was an avid golfer and fisherman who always had a smile on his face.

Join the family in celebrating Bill’s life on Friday, October 30th from 3:30-8:00pm at Royal Ashburn Golf Club, 995 Myrtle Rd W, Ashburn, ON L0B 1A0.

Dear Granny of 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

At Robina’s request, a private family service was held.

(Longtime member of Newcastle United Church, and former co-owner of Toms & Sons LTD, and Toms IGA for 37 years)

Passed away peacefully on October 22, 2015 in his 88th year at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville.

Murray, beloved husband for 63 years of Marjorie Frances (nee Toms).

Cherished father of Mary Grace and her husband David Milton of Brooklin and Ruth Marjorie and her husband Nico de Jonge of Whitby.

Devoted grandfather of Ian Milton (Tanya), Sarah (Kyle Jordan), Lesle (Corey Klender), Jennifer (Jeffrey Hawn), and Megan (Adam Smith). Devoted great grandfather to 11 great grandchildren.

Predeceased by his brothers James(1994), Donald(1932), Harry (1978), Alan (1995) and his sister Kathleen (1999).  Brother-in-law of Mary Grace Wallace and her late husband Tom and Jean Ellen Wagar and her late husband Bud.

Murray was an active supporter of his community, serving on local council, the school board, the hospital board, and the Clarington Food Bank. He was a life member and Past President (1964) of the Newcastle Lions Club and a Melvin Jones recipient; founding president of the Newcastle BIA and a founding director with Newcastle Bond Head Ratepayers’ Association.

In 2003 he was the unanimous choice of Council for the Senior of the Year Award.

Friends may call at the Newcastle Funeral Home, 386 Mill St. S., Newcastle, Ontario on Wednesday, October 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with Lions Service to be held at 6:30 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be held at NEWCASTLE UNITED CHURCH, 84 Mill St. S., Newcastle on Thursday, October 29 at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Bond Head Cemetery.

Donations in Murray’s memory to Newcastle United Church, or the Memorial Hospital Foundation Bowmanville, would be greatly appreciated by his family.

Beloved husband of Marjorie for 33 years.

Devoted father of Paul, David, Pat, Terry, Tom, Cheryl, Mary Lou, Jeff, Karen and the late Stephen.

Cherished grandfather of 18 and great grandfather of 16 and predeceased by granddaughter Leanne.

Bill will be fondly remembered by his many family and friends both here and abroad and by his friends at Teakwood Village in Largo, Florida.

Visitation will be held at the DESTEFANO FUNERAL HOME, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa (south side of Taunton Road, east of Thornton Road by the Oshawa Airport) 905-440-3595 on Saturday, October 31st from 10:00-11:30am.

A Service to Celebrate Bill’s life will be held in the DeStefano Chapel at 11:30am. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In memory of Bill, donations may be made to the Durham Region Cancer Centre or to Sick Kids.

BARNES, Herbert Edwin (Ted) Barnes, Obituary

Barnes HerbertBARNES, Herbert Edwin (Ted) Barnes -     August 30, 1928 – October 22, 2015

Retiree, 40+ Years General Motors. 

Born, raised and lifetime resident of Oshawa, ON. 

Passed away at Lakeridge Health while under Palliative Care.  

Ted leaves behind his wife of 67 years,

Edna (Gower); his daughters Sally Lloyd (Doug) and Lisa Jones, daughter-in-law Dolly.

Pre-deceased by his son David; parents Jennie and Harry, and 13 siblings.

Loving grandfather to David’s Sara, Carrie (Scott) and Ted Barnes; Lloyd daughter’s Amanda (Darryl) and Brianne (Joel); and to Dawson Jones. Great-grandfather to Austyn, Blake and Caden.

Ted will also be missed by his extended family, dear friends and wonderful neighbours. 

Ted started with “the Boys Group” at General Motors when he was just 16 years old, and then took a pipe-fitting apprenticeship as he was allowed time off to play baseball. 

Ted played for several winning teams over the years and his McCallum Transport A Team was inducted into in the Oshawa Sport’s Hall of Fame for their exceptional stats.  He also holds the Right Fielder position for the Oshawa Legionaire’s ALL DECADE team of the 1950’s. His career culminated with the Oshawa Merchants.

Fittingly, he also met his future wife Edna while practicing in Alexandra Park.  Ted remained active in many sports after marriage. He umpired baseball, played hockey, golf and had been a long-time member of the Oshawa (Kirby) Ski Club and Oshawa Curling Club.  

He retired a proud employee of GM as a Construction/Maintenance Foreman after 42 years of service.  In his retirement he enjoyed many years at the cottage, with family and friends on Beech Lake in Canarvon. He loved nothing more than to help others with his handyman skills and continued to do so right up until the last several months of his life. 

In accordance with Ted’s wishes cremation has taken place. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 8, upstairs at the Oshawa Curling Club, located at 226 Bond Street, from 1-4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Fund or the Durham Humane Society would be appreciated.

Bill was an amazing father and an incredible grandfather that everyone looked up to, in indescribable ways. 

He was kind, devoted and always put family before himself.

Predeceased by her two sons Stanislaw of Poland and Boleslaw “Bill”.

Dear Babcia of Gosia (Chris), Richard (Tanya), Serena, Samantha, Maria, Malgosia, Jan, Antoni, and Frank.  Will be truly missed by her fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild Kamil of Poland.

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Dr. Conley and second floor staff for their care of Katarzyna and their compassion over the past fifteen years.
